Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes made a 19-second statement to reporters in Gainesville on Wednesday night, announcing he will effectively suspend himself for the entire Vanderbilt game for his attempted eye gouge of a Georgia player.
I mean really what does this say about CUM...he didn't take a strong enough stand with a half game suspension, so then the player that committed the awful act comes back a day or so later and has a press conference and announces a full game suspension for himself...What!? Are you kidding me!!? I could NEVER see one of our players coming back and circumventing what CNS had decided on. That's pie in the face twice for CUM. But really...what does this say.

Maybe it's just me being the old cynic that I am, but what I see here is damage control in anticipation of the NFL draft.
ding - ding! we have a winner.

He should be kicked off the team and charged with assault.
Finally, someone with the right perspective. There are risks associated with playing a collision sport like football. Intentional attempts to maim you shouldn't be one of them. The guy has no business on a football field. Some things are just unforgivable.

I ain't buying it. An All American suspending himself from playing. Yeah right. Something stinks in Hogtown.

Re: Spikes to miss the whole game vs. Vandy

All about "damage control" at this point.... CUM showed his true colors initially and based on the backlash from national media (including EX NFL players) this was done to keep Spikes as high in the April draft as possible. In the end; a half, full game against Vany= WHO CARES? Spikes is looking forward to the rest I am sure. Watch for Spikes now to do community work.. in an attempt to put a positive spin on his character.

Re: Spikes to miss the whole game vs. Vandy

So Spikes is coming off of a hamstring injury, already suspended for the 1st half of what will likely be a blowout, and decides to suspend himself for the 2nd half of what will likely be a 20 point game by the time he could have played anyway?

This might have had more to do with a hamstring than an eye...

Re: Spikes to miss the whole game vs. Vandy

I'm quite sure that this was a calculated move by UF to limit the PR damage caused by Meyer's half-game suspension and the massive condemnation that followed.

By assigning this change of heart to Spikes, it makes him look like he is taking responsibility for his actions, showing remorse and being sufficiently contrite. It also saves Meyer from appearing to cave to public pressure by increasing the suspension.

Probably most people are not going to believe that this was Spikes decision. I don't know if it was or wasn't, but it seems like a very convenient avenue for defusing the national outrage.
