fared with Katrina? Should I start stockpiling Tabasco sauce? I think it's west of NO, but I'm not sure how far.

Tommy, I have some friends who live on the west side of New Orleans and they had little damage. One firend told me he lost 2 shingles off his roof. The Tobasco plant should be fine. If I hear different, save a bottle as a collectors item.
I have family (in-laws) and Lafayette and the surrounding area. They fared
fine, wind and rain but nothing major. Iberia parish came out about the same
from what I understand. I worked at the Tabasco central office for a summer while I was in school in Lafayette. Very cool place with a lot of history.
They had an item in the food section of yesterday's paper that said that they were OK and would continue as normal. There's other good hot sauces, but Tabasco is the Rolls Royce.

Avery Island is near the town of New Iberia, connected by a bridge that was distroyed in the hurricane.
The manufacturing facility on the island is up and running and started bottling TABASCO sauce around the first of October.
In the 1800's McIlhenny Company lost its total crop. Since that time they have spread out the growing of their peppers to other locations to prevent a repeat.
The majority of their pepper is now grown in Costa Rica....but do not tell anyone!!!!!
So I would not spend a lot of money stocking up on TOBASCO at this time...unless you just want to have a lot on hand.
It dawned on me that people, as I originally did, may think Avery Island is an island. It is not. It is in fact a little bluff sitting in the La. delta. Maybe this hyperlink will come through explaining it with pictures.
