Chocoate Frosting Question?

Share

My grandmother used to make the best chocolate cake, everything homemade of course. Her frosting was a fudge type candy, it actually hardened on the cake. I have searched different recipes but have yet to find a good one. Does anyone have a recipe handed down from their mom or grandmother? I wish I had thought to get one.

Re: Chocoate Frosting Question?

Wish I could help, but nothing comes to mind. I've made this cake before and the fudge icing hardens fairly quickly.

Re: Chocoate Frosting Question?

Preacher's Cake

1 c brn sugar
1 c granulated sugar
1/2 c Crisco (regular, not butter flavored)
2 eggs
2 c AP flour
1/2 c cocoa
1/2 t salt
1 t baking soda
1/2 c buttermilk
1 c boiling water
1 t vanilla

This cake batter will be thin, don't panic.

Cream sugars with Crisco. Add eggs one at a time beating after each addition. Sift dry ingrediants and alternate adding dry and wet ingrediants.

Bake @350 till done. I can't give an exact time because I use different pans (Bundt, tube, and sheet) that cook at different times.

Frosting

1 stick butter (use real butter)
4 T cocoa
1/3 c buttermilk
1 # xxx sugar (confectionary sugar)
1 t vanilla

Melt the butter over low heat add the cocoa and buttermilk, mix well. Take off heat and add sugar and vanilla. (I usually sift my conf. sugar). Pour frosting over HOT cake, I usually poke holes in sheet pan cake so the frosting gets in cake.

This frosting sets up like fudge and I have made just the frosting and added nuts and/or raisins and poured into plate to eat as fudge.

Talking Re: Chocoate Frosting Question?

I have a killer "cooked chocolate icing" recipe from my great-grandmother that sounds exactly like what you are looking for....I'll post it later today when I get home and find it...

Re: Chocoate Frosting Question?

I'm going to go ahead and include the homemade chocolate cake recipe. I have to give credit for this recipe to my great grandmother, Reba Drake.

20 Minute Chocolate Cake

Cake Ingredients
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 stick butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup water
3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs

Mix flour and sugar in large mixing bowl. Place butter, shortening, water and cocoa into saucepan. Bring to boil and add to flour and sugar. Mix well with spoon and add salt, vanilla and eggs. Pour into greased baking pan and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

Cooked Icing
1 stick butter
1/2 cup milk
3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 box confectioners sugar
1 cup pecans, chopped (optional)

Bring to boil butter, milk and cocoa. Add confectioners sugar, salt, vanilla and pecans. Put on cake as soon as it comes out of the oven. Icing will harden into a candy like layer as it cools.
