Homemade Beer?!

Share

Are there any homebrewers on here? Just wanted to say hello, and maybe get someone else to thinking about it.

I didn't even know you could make beer at home until I watched Beerfest, googled homemade beer and voila... on my way! For the uninitiated, it's been legal on a federal level since 1978... something Carter did right. It's legal in 46 of 50 states. No it doesn't require a still, has nothing to do with moonshine, & won't make you go blind as fusal alcohols aren't created during a controlled fermentation, but through the condensation effects of distillation.

Anyway google "homebrewing" or "homebrewed beer" for more info. Many great online communities to learn from. I suggest visiting homebrewtalk.com and making a first purchase from alabrew.com (Birmingham based) or midwestsupplies.com There are several HB clubs in Alabama, including Mobile (LA Lagers), Huntsville, & Auburn.

It's awesome fun if you like craft beer.

Schlante,
Phillip

Re: Homemade Beer?!

I don't on a regular basis anymore, but I usually make a few batches around the holidays.

I had an absolute dead ringer for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. My summer brew was a lemon honey wheat that refreshed you while it kicked your butt.

Re: Homemade Beer?!

A buddy of mine brought over a couple that he had brewed for me to try a couple of weeks ago. One of them was an amber red that I must admit was quite tasty. He said the whole process is rather easy and it must be if he can do it.

SNPA is a good bier, no one can go wrong with a well made American Pale Ale! Keep brewing man! I've made about 15 batches, haven't made a wheat yet, but LOVE Paulaner's Hefeweizen or Wiehenstephan! (sp?)

I concur, so long as you sanitize everything making good beer is pretty easy! Then again it's kind of like going to the welding shop this morning and talking with the guy there. I'm like this dude seems high and it's 8 AM. Yet I'm sure he could do at least 10 times the work I could with a torch & welding machine! Seems skill/talent & mental acuity don't always dwell in the same body! Though I'm sure the same has been said of me!

Re: Homemade Beer?!

Haha its funny that this thread popped up here. I posted one awhile back on G&C to see if anybody did this. I guess that was about a year ago when I was first starting up.

But I try to homebrew. Actually, just yesterday, I popped the first top on some homebrew I made awhile back. I'm hoping to one day make a batch were I sit back and say to myself "Dang! I made this myself!?". So far it's just been "Well that tastes like beer, so I guess I did something right."

Oh and, RDWHAHB

I've tasted "beer" they actually sell in stores that don't fit that description, so you might could even make some money yourself off of those concoctions.

Speaking of bad beer, here's a picture a beer-snob buddy of mine sent me:

Haha. Well in that reguard, the beer that I have made is way better than some of the carbonated water excuses for beer that you can get at a store.

I guess what I meant by the earlier statement was that I really haven't made a batch of beer that I'm truly satisfied with, and I won't stop until I do.

Re: Homemade Beer?!

If anyone lives in Mobile and loves IPA I suggest getting ur butt down to hopjacks on dauphin street. Great Divide has a 15th anniversary Doube Pale Ale. The Greatest Beer ever. 8 bucks a glass. 10% Alc. Content. I believe this is a limited release so make it quick. I might have to make a trip this weekend.

Thank you state gubment for the increased alcohol limit!!! That itself deserves a Yea Alabama.

Hopjacks has turned into a great place...I hope to get there much more often since I am going back to working at Wintzell's Downtown soon...BTW, anyone in the Mobile area, do not forget that Beerfest is this Saturday night....Such a great festival...so many beers, so little time

I tried to go but it was sold out. So I went to burbon street. Since they have to bars called beerfest I had to take a seat. No beers by great divide though... Plenty of pale ales. Plenty of great live music. But why on earth does beer in louisiana taste so bland? I blame it on the interstate "lumps" all the beer must travel to get to its destination. Flat beer is bad beer.

Re: Homemade Beer?!

It's interesting...I've been making my own beer and wine for some time, and I just got the bright idea to search TideFans to see if anyone else did. There were quite a few (at least more than expected) threads ranging in dates from 2006-2009. I wonder if there would be enough interest to create a separate forum? I know TideFans doesn't want to encourage alcohol abuse, but in my experience, people who homebrew rarely abuse alcohol--they just enjoy it.

Right now, I'm making a Honey Wheat Ale, which--based on the smell--should be delicious.

The worst beer ever to roll across my lips was brewed in Louisiana called Lagniappe Beer. I wouldn't cook with it or use it to water the herb garden. Another beer I found in Louisiana was Rikenjaks (brewed by Rick and Jack in Lake Charles) I don't know if they are still in business but their micro beer was out of this world. They had a pub right there at the brewery, live music and a party every night.
