You Make The Call (Substitute)

Share

Well, since TideHawk was not able to post a YMTC this week, I will make an effort. This actually happened in a JV game that I worked earlier this week.

Team Purple throws a pass that is intercepted by White on the White 11. As soon as the White DB gains possession, an inadvertent whistle sounds (not mine). The White DB is tackled on the 50. Who gets the ball and where?

I'll say that since the whistle blew after the change of possession, White gets to keep the ball, but cannot advance it. White ball on their 11...

I agree. (Then take the whistle away from the offending official. )

Unless there is some quirk in high school rules, I think NYBF has that covered. RTScott's idea of taking the offending official's whistle isn't bad either, and quite funny to boot!

Re: You Make The Call (Substitute)

Question, what would happen if the player who intercepted the pass had looped backwards into the endzone and been in the endzone when the whistle sounded? Am I right in assuming that the team would have to chose between accepting a safety or giving the ball back to the other team?

Depends on where the INT took place. Outside the 5, they would choose to have a replay of the down rather than take a safety.

Inside the 5, they could take the ball at the INT spot or replay the down.

Inadvertant whistles are always a problem, since one team or the other will be put at a disadvantage. That's why it's important for officials to train themselves to keep the whistle out of their mouth until they see the ball, and it's dead by rule.

Re: You Make The Call (Substitute)

Very good guys! White got the ball on the 11 and promptly went on an 89 yard drive for the winning TD.
