Re: HS rules question

Yes. There is no rule in high school that says an offense can't break the huddle with more than 11 players. The high school rule regarding substitutions says: "Between downs any number of eligible substitutes may replace players. Replaced players shall leave the field immediately." If #22 comes in to replace #23 and gets to the huddle and tells #23 to leave just at the huddle breaks, there is no foul. If #22 gets to the huddle and tells #23 to leave and #23 sticks around just to hear what play is called and then leaves as the huddle breaks, there is a penalty for illegal substitution. The penalty is not for breaking the huddle with more than 11, it is for #23 not leaving immediately upon being notified that he is being replaced.

Re: HS rules question

Thanks. You hit it on the head. First, I thought it was an infraction to start with, so thx for straightening me out on that. Then, your example is almost exactly what happened. I honestly think the opposing team sent in more than 1 sub, one left the field immediately...then when the huddle was broke, 3 players went wide with one going completely off the field.

Rec league but playing under hs rules. Didn't have anything to do with the outcome...just p'ed off the ref cause the fans wouldn't let it go.

Re: HS rules question

i had a situation, last weekend when people still think its a foul to break the huddle with 12. its not, that rule was thrown out 2 season's ago. but the coach's still think its a penalty. RTR!
