In the comments they say that he was hit with a stadium chair? It looked like something completely limp to me. A jacket or seat cushion, maybe?
At any rate, it looks like the fans think that the officials blew a call on a pass that was ruled incomplete in the endzone (fans thought it was a TD).
This guy doesn't realize the trouble he has bought himself. In Alabama assaulting a sports official is a Class C felony. If I were the official who was attacked, he'd better get a very good lawyer because I would most certainly press charges against him.

I am a retired sports official. I know that many years ago, after doing a playoff game up on Sand Mountain, I got a call on Monday after the game from Mr. Bubba Scott, the head man at AHSAA back in those days. He wanted to know what I knew about a fight after the game involving coaches. He was extremely angry about it. Said suspensions, etc. were going to happen. That was just two opposing coaches getting into it. It can lead to the school getting whacked. Sadly, the schools are held responsible for all the crazy drunks in the stands that are on their side of the field. While in Germany in the Army, I had a coach from a team take a swing at me after a basketball game. His punishment was LIFE suspension from coaching any kind of sports team in the US Army controlled sports system or high school sports. Plus he was brought up on charges by his company commander for assault. A heavy price to pay for a hot headed swing and barely make contact with me. The real funny thing was he screamed we officials were responsible for his team losing. His team lost by something like 25-30 points. I guess I made too many jumpshots against his team that day!!

When I was in Jr. high, our Varsity was playing an away game and my Dad (former college player) noticed a person on the other sideline acting real funny. Dad walked down to the gate in the fence and when the other teams fan jumped the fence and headed toward the huddle, Dad caught & tackled him. The guy had a knife and was going after one of our players that had been going at it with his little brother. Dad told him to "drop it, or eat it" and he held him till the law came for him.
A couple of years later a intoxicated parent on the sidelines (many of you older posters would recognize the name) took a swing at me after I tackled his son near their side of the field. I wish he had connected, he probably would have broken his hand. I talked to him a few years later and he apologized though I doubt he even remembered!

"Hackleburg police chief Kenny Hallmark identified the fan in the video as Don Cagle, 22, of Jasper, Ala. He was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and two Class C felonies: assault on a sports official and assault on a police officer. Class C is the least severe felony charge — assault in the third degree. Hallmark said that after the video ended, Cagle kicked an officer and spit in his face three times. Cagle bonded out of Marion County Jail, though no court date has yet been set. Hallmark said Cagle has no criminal record that he knows of. Hallmark said he couldn’t speak to a motive, though he noted Cagle was on the Lynn side of the field and was wearing Lynn colors."
It may well be "only" a Class C felony and that may be the least severe class of felony, but for those of you who may be thinking about doing the same thing, he is looking at 1 to 10 years and a maximum fine of $15,000.00 for each felony if convicted. Will he actually do any time? Probably not and if he does it won't be much. However, he will most likely have a felony hanging around his neck for the rest of his life. I hope it was worth it to him.

I think this is the key thing, for the rest of this guys life he will have to say that he is a felon on every job application he ever fills out. Just because you thought a ref blew a call, how stupid. It is stuff like this that has made me make a conscious effort to not yell and critisize officials during games, at any level. It just sets a bad example and encourages others to do something stupid.
