Either team can advance a scrimmage kick from behind the neutral zone.

Yeah, I saw that one. I noticed immediately that the officials were standing back in the video. They were waiting to see if the teams figured it out.

Rules question - how long before the ref blows it dead if no one attempts to advance the ball?

The quotes are from another board about this same play. The rule reference is from the rule book.

Quote:
You can't kill the play until the ball is dead by rule. The officials on the field determined they still had a live ball situation so they would have to wait until something made the ball dead by rule. There's no time limit on how long a live ball in someone's possession can REMAIN live. If the holder had tried to give the ball to an official, hopefully they wouldn't have accepted it and let it fall to the ground. There IS a time limit for a loose, live ball sitting on the ground.
Quote:
As for him standing there, its not really any differant than a QB back to pass with good protection and no open reciever, he can stand there as long as he wants.
If it is a loose ball:

4-2-e-2
The ball becomes dead and the down is ended when any loose ball is on the ground motionless and no player attempts to secure possession.

I assume this also applies when the ball is behind the neutral zone.

So, their saving grace was the fact that the ball bounced into the hands of the holder, who didn't drop it, but just stood up in disbelief (of their loss), but because he didn't drop it, he kept the play alive. More blind luck than anything else...

I saw where a couple of people thought the holder should have been ruled down. That is, of course, speculation due mostly to camera angles.

It did look to me like his knee touched the ground as he picked the ball up. But if the whistle didn't blow...
