Wal Mart To Hit $500 Billion In Sales By 2010

Share

That's a lot of people greeters in their 80's handing out shopping carts

"Wal-Mart will leave massive paths of destruction in its wake..."

The tremors created by Wal-Mart's growth will also be felt among the supplier community, noted Meyers. By 2010 the typical consumer products manufacturer could find 35 percent to 40 percent of its sales going through Wal-Mart.

Shhhhh! Don't tell the People's Republic of Maryland. The legislature up here passed a bill to put a special 8% tax on Walmart. (And people wonder why Maryland prospers less than Virginia. ) The governor just vetoed the bill, but I'm sure the socialists will keep trying to drive off business.

8% tax on Wal Mart, but not other retailers????

Methinks the Wal-Mart lawyers would prevail in that contest.

I agree it was a bad bill and I am glad gov Erlich opposes it. It wasn't exactly targeted against Walmart though. It applied to all employers of over 10,000 people of which there are currently 4 - WalMart, Giant Food, Northrup Grumman, and Johns Hopkins.

I knew about the 10,000 employee threshold. But, I heard that only Walmart had that many employees. In essence this was backhanded legislation targeting Walmart. (Maybe there were other provisions in the legislation that made it only relevant to Walmart.) Regardless, this is stupid legislation, and agree with you that I was glad to hear the governor vetoed it.

A pretty incredible stat - the day after Thanksgiving is retail's biggest day. Year before last, WalMart had $1.5 bill sales in the one day (they were a little short of that last day-after).

You'll like this Maryland law. Last week, while gas prices were probably around $2.20, I heard that several gas stations were selling gas for $1.99. The state steps in and orders these national gas stations to raise their price. Why? It would be unfair to the mom-and-pop gas stations. Unbelievable! Reverse price fixing! The consumer has to subsidize, by law, the inefficient gas stations.

I love visiting Annapolis and Baltimore's Inner Harbor, but I swear the government is retarded. They go out of their way to screw things up!

10-12 years ago, I was working in the electronics department of a regular (Not Super) WalMart on the day after Thanksgiving. Our departmant ALONE did over $100,000 in sales that day.
