With midterm elections looming, former war cheerleader/GOP Rep. gets real about Iraq

from the above linked article:
***********
Congressman Gil Gutknecht, a strong supporter of the war since it began in March of 2003, told reporters in a telephone conference call Tuesday that American forces appear to have no operational control of much of Baghdad.
“The condition there is worse than I expected,” he said. “... I have to be perfectly candid: Baghdad is a serious problem.”

While Gutknecht is still not in favor of setting deadlines for the withdrawal of all American troops, he said the situation in Iraq’s largest city has clearly deteriorated.
“Baghdad is worse today than it was three years ago,” he said.

“We learned it’s not safe to go anywhere outside of the Green Zone any part of the day,” he said.
****************
(So much for the ridiculous notion of lazy reporters hanging out in 5 star hotels in Bagdad not giving us the real picture.)

I think we will see quite a few more delusional Senators and Congressmen facing reality with Iraq before this fall's elections.

Yep - terrorism is alive and well in Iraq. This comes as a surprise to you? The attacks are coming more often as the terrorists become more desperate. Even the 2nd boob in command that bought it a few weeks ago admited as much...

Yes, indeed, the insurgency is in its' last throes. Thus saith the 2nd boob in command in this country. Yet some still buy it.

I don't know what to believe, but I think that the terrorists are trying desperately to start a civil war. So far they have been completely unsuccessful. By and large, the only groups murdering innocent people in Iraq right now are terrorists. This per the Iraqi government...

Well lets see. The Sunnis are killing the Shiites, the Shiites are killing the Sunnis. Both kill us if we get in the way. What more do we need before we realize that we started a civil war.

How about the Iraqis thinking that they are involved in a civil war? They do not.

Americans, sitting at home on their couches, believe otherwise. Who is more likely to be correct?

BTW, why do you hate America? WE started a civil war in Iraq? That disgusts me...

Heh. Sunnis and Shiites loved each other before we tore up the playhouse.

Your post leaves me thinking your sources of info are very limited. There is indeed a civil war in progress.
And we are smack in the middle of it.

Sunnis killing Shiites.

Shiites killing Sunnis.

Reports of death squads linked to the govt.

I agree that terrorists are doing a lot of the killing, but I'm starting to wonder how broad we can draw the label "terrorist" when the govt. is being shown as being complicit.

The shiites are looking pretty strong because they have Iran's backing. The U.S. takes out the saddam government, sets up a shiite government, and Iran is tickled pink.

Here's a realistic assessment of what's happening in Iraq:

http://www.debka.com/article.php?aid=1182
From the above link:
********
Shiite fighters, many in the uniforms of the new Iraqi national army or Iraqi security forces, are battling Sunni gunmen, in defiance of their duties to - and the authority of – the Nouri al-Maliki government. This conflict is nothing but outright civil war.

I take it you don't like President Bush that much, . Seriously, I know I don't come over much but how would you handle this whole war of terror? I know I just opened pandora's box because you will say what did Iraq have to do with all this? The United States could basically just sit still and just twiddle our thumbs and never bother anyone in the world again and those ragheads would still be out to kill Americans and Israelies.

How would you as Vice President to John Kerry or Al Gore recommend we do in response to all this hatred toward the US and Israel?

I'm sorry, that's a question for the Solutions Department. Chukker only works in the Complaints Department.
