What would a trully Conservative Platform consist of?

DiggThis

I grow weary of candidate speak. It appears that conservatism is no longer thought of as a platform that can win.

Just a little brain storming exercise here.

What would you suggest if you were asked for 5 planks for a conservative platform?

I'm not asking what are the conservative platforms that are being run on, if their are any. Ideally, what would be the planks of a true conservative?

Here are five that come to mind.
1. Specific goals in reducing the size of the federal government.
2. Specific changes to send State's duties back to them.
3. Putting in place a new taxing mechanism like the Fair Tax.
4. Privatizing the SS system.
5. Eliminate economic aid to mother's of children born out of wedlock.

The fair tax may need work but I think the single most significant accomplishment that comes with it is providing a "volume knob" for the rate of taxation so that everyone could understand and know what is being charged.

If you were asked to make 5 recommendations for such a platform; what would they be?

For me:

* SS & Medicare reform
* Balanced budget - to be met through the reduction of services, not increased taxation
* Term limits
* Elimination of lobbies
* Bring our troops home from around the world. It is time that we stopped subsidizing the security of the entire western world.

I would also like to see a simplified tax code and secure borders...

Oh yeah.............my personal favourite.

Bar lawyers from holding elected office. They are by choice members of the judicial branch of government. An inherent conflict of interest...........especially for the citizenry and a source of many of our current problems.

Dang, NYBF. Are you running?

2-5, you've got my vote.

#1, I need more info, but I might overlook any differences if you get 2-5 done.

* Elimination of lobbies
In medieval England, in the region known as the Danelaw, there was an interesting legal concept. While certain crimes were not punishable by death (i.e the state would not put the perpetrator to death itself), the perpetrator was declared to be beyond the protection of the laws. Once man was declared beyond the protection of the laws, anybody could kill him with impunity.
This might be a good category for lobbyists.

Re: What would a trully Conservative Platform consist of?

1) Reformation of the tax system; no school zone tax for parents who send kids to private school; implement the Fair Tax; no SS tax
2) Nat'l security; borders/ ports/
3) Decentralization of gov't; more state autonomy
4) tied into #1 and #3, but figured it deserved its own place; cut gov't spending significantly and its 'pork' projects
5) I really like NYBamaFan's idea of term limits

Can we add lawyers, popcorn chompers, Phil Fulmer, Tom Cruise, Mattew McConnoughay and Fred Phelps (and krewe) to this list?

I think we have all concluded that Ron Paul will not be elected to the office of president. RP's web site is the closest thing to a conservative/revolutionary agenda that I have ever seen put forth by anyone in the Federal government.

I had not looked at it before.

You should look at the site if you haven't.

I agree with all.....one thing I find funny, and I'm in the same boat, is the call for removal of troops in Iraq. 6 or so years ago, many of the same people supported it. Or at least, weren't sure if they for it or agin' it; like me.

Re: What would a trully Conservative Platform consist of?

I think reinvasion and removal of Hussein was justified based on his violation of the terms of the cease fire agreement. But the big question remains: What next?
