ThumbsUp Big MMA PPV event this weekend

Share

A new promoter (Affiction Clothing and Adrenaline MMA) is getting into the MMA arena and has one of the biggest fights I've ever seen this weekend (July 17). A lot of big name fighters, including Fedor Emelianenko, will be involved.

Also, apparently Megadeth will be performing live during the event.

Should be a testosterone-filled evening.

Main card
WAMMA Heavyweight Championship bout: Fedor Emelianenko vs Tim Sylvia
Heavyweight bout: Andrei Arlovski vs Ben Rothwell
Heavyweight bout: Josh Barnett vs Pedro Rizzo
Middleweight bout: Matt Lindland vs Fabio Negao
Light heavyweight bout: Renato Sobral vs Mike Whitehead

Preliminary card
Heavyweight bout: Aleksander Emelianenko vs Paul Buentello
Light heavyweight bout: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs Edwin Dewees
Middleweight bout: Vitor Belfort vs Terry Martin
Featherweight bout: Savant Young vs Mark Hominick
Welterweight bout: Mike Pyle vs JJ Ambrose
Middleweight bout: Justin Levens vs Ray Lazama

LOL! I heard about that. For Cohen, I guess going to Arkansas was like shooting fish in a barrel.

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

It will be interesting to see how long Affliction can stay in the game and whether or not they can be a long-time competitor to UFC.

Personally, I'm going to stay home and watch UFC for free on TV rather than shell out for the PPV. I'd love to be able to watch Fedor fight though. I've seen his stuff from PRIDE but I want to see how he stands up to competition in 2008 and if he will look like the clear "real world champion" he's supposed to be. I'm a little bit skeptical given the mixed results of some other Pride fighters who've come to the states. Wanderlei Silva and Anderson Silva have done great, but Shogun Rua, CroCop and a couple of others haven't lived up to the hype.

I'm so glad I've found a sports bar in Barnerville that doesn't charge cover for UFC PPVs. It's nice to spend $15 on beer and food to watch an event in a big roomful of people rather than spend $40 just for the PPV alone.

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

If I can get back in town in time I'm getting the crew together to watch this event. Fedor has to be the baddest SOB on the planet. No heavyweight in the UFC can hang with him.

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

In case you guys haven't heard, Fedor won in 36 seconds. Rumour has it that a battle against Randy Couture is in the works.

I went on youtube to see if I could post the fight, but it is copyright-blocked.

Here's a good highlight of Fedor's fights over the last several years, if anyone is interested.

His beat down of my boy, Heath Herring, at about the 3:30 mark is particulary brutal.

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

I'm curious to see how much the free Silva/Irvin fight hurt the buy-rate for Affliction.

In other news, here are some photos I took at a MMA event held in Tuscaloosa on Saturday evening:

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

Up until the Arlovski fight, that was the most boring PPV I've seen in a while. I suppose Affliction will continue on just on the strength of Fedor alone, but they have got to get more quality fighters. Right now it's Fedor and a bunch of rejects from the UFC.

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

I don't know which MMA you watch, but to call Affliction boring is crazy. That was a stacked card with several KO's (which is what we Americans want to see). The last several UFC's that I've wasted my money on (including Jackson/Griffin) were just horrible. I enjoyed this card and I hope that the next Affliction card is just as good. Funny thing, while watching the pre-fight my wife and sister-in-law looked at the fighters and said there's no way that short guy will beat the mohawk guy..They were amazed when the short guy ended the fight in less than a minute. I have the luxury of having 2 big TV's in my man-cave so I watched both fights Sat. night. Those who chose to watch the free fight rather than buying the Affliction fight missed a great card.

The problem with Affliction is that, while they can boast a good heavyweight division, they have no signature fights outside of Fedor/Arlovski if they can't get Randy Couture under contract. While UFC might not have a strong heavyweight division (Although it is still stacked with decent fighters), they can still do several major league money matches now that Anderson Silva is fighting the light-heavyweights. It immediately opens up potential fights with Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. Anderson has also expressed a desire to really dip down in weight and possibly fight GSP... which would be monumental.

Re: Big MMA PPV event this weekend

The HW division in UFC is a joke...I can see what you're saying about things outside the HW division in Affliction. I would hope that they would recruit some good LHW and MW guys to fill cards. Fedor says he'll have two more fights this year. So, I'm taking that as there will be 2 more Affliction cards this year. I will buy them just to see Fedor fight. I have seen every one of his fights, including that one bogus loss in the Rings tourney. I have lost all patience with the UFC after the Griffin/Jackson fight. The Hamill/Bisping fight was bad enough, but taking Rampage's title with Griffin laying on him for one round and landing a few leg kicks was unacceptable.
