With President-elect Barack Obama set to take the oath of office to begin his first term, one New York Congressman wants to make it possible for him to one day serve a third. Representative Jose Serrano (D) has introduced a bill in the House to abolish the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which limits presidents to two consecutive terms or ten years in office.
I highly doubt this is going to happen. There is always a talk of that when a President serves two terms, except for Bush (who even the Republicans wouldn't want him to serve a thrid term if he had the opportunity). I remember the Republicans suggesting that at the end of Reagan's second term, and Democrats suggesting it at the end of Clinton's. It doesn't have much of a chance of getting past Congress, and if it does there is no chance that enough States will approve it. There is no national momentum for that at all. The (unscientific) poll on the page that you linked says that only 25% of the public is in favor.
what disturbs me is this country was founded on the premise that monarchies and royalty are bad. so it baffles me as to why the common people of this country try so hard to find these elite people to blindly follow and declare as their savior
I don't see how a president could make it to a 3rd term in today's political climate.
Reagan, Clinton, and Bush were so beat up by the end of their 2nd terms, I doubt they would have run again.
I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion re: Reagan. He had his Iran/Contra scandal, but his brand was still strong enough for his VP to succeed him.
Anyhow, the Church of Obama is getting a little outrageous with its worship rituals. Commemorative coins and other ridiculous knickknacks on QVC and elsewhere, a 24 hr Obama Channel on Comcast, inauguration tickets in the $1000s, women swooning at speeches, people talking about how he should get a shot at a 3rd term....
.... and he has yet to serve one day in office. Never mind that he's already broken several campaign promises before he has even sat down behind the desk. That doesn't seem to bother any one.

Disagree. Both Reagan and Clinton would have won in landslides had they been able to run for a third term, and Clinton at least would have loved to run.
I was a donor and volunteer for the Obama campaign-which, let me tell you, in Palin country that was all kinds of fun. I like the guy and think he's going to do a good job. I'm even against term limits as a matter of principle (I don't believe in limiting the power of people to vote for whomever they wish subject to reasonable qualification.) This bill is just a bad idea doomed to failure.

They attempted to make George Washington King. Hamilton argued extensively for the US to be a monarchy (thinking that he'd be the monarch.) We had no term limits on the Presidency for the first 170 or so years of our nation's history.

Of course. But every president prior to FDR honored the precedent which was voluntarily set by Washington, so it wasn't a problem. If FDR had come along sooner, the 22nd Amendment would have too.
