I must say I think Obama handled this one perfectly. He worked behind the scenes and gave the military the go ahead to do its job. I think it would be hard for anyone, regardless or political leanings, to find fault with how this played out. I also want to give 2 thumbs up to the Navy Seals who did their job exceptionally well.

So the underlying question still remains- How do you crack down on piracy and identify pirate ships from fishing ships, especially when they are still in port? As long as Somalia is lawless then this problem will continue. We can't depend on the UN for anything useful and the more we do things by ourselves the more criticism we will receive. Perhaps we just aggressively protect our own vessels and let the other ones fend for themselves with their weak governments.

This has shades of Bill Clinton written all over it. I sense an expeditionary mission into Somalia (again).

I do agree that he handled this one correctly. Worse case, one American and three skinnies die. The hard liners couldn't crack on him because he showed strength and the libs won't go against their own so he was good to go regardless of the outcome.

Seriously. After what the SEALs unleashed on them, I'd imagine that pirates would much rather attack a French ship.
You don't read the news? French free hostages from pirates

It was the third time the French has freed hostages from pirates.

France has been at the forefront of multinational anti-piracy efforts to protect the strategic shipping zone in the northern Indian Ocean

The French have a president with a spine. First time in 20 years or so.

Actually, the French have been kicking pirate butt (though their most recent rescue did not go as smoothly). Suprising, I know!

Edit: Oops, didn't read far enough to see Bayou's link. oh well

Re: Captain of Pirated Food Relief Ship Rescued

I disagree with Obama on the vasr majority of his decisions but I am definitely behind him here. He allowed the people in the know to do their jobs and the SEALs know how to do their job. They patiently waited for their chance and took it. This is the second thing that I agree with Obama on. Maybe a pattern is developing. Props where props are do.

Re: Captain of Pirated Food Relief Ship Rescued

The problem is that many shipping companies consider piracy a cost of business making piracy pay off.

If anything, this may make more shipping lines that sail in that area register their ships with the USA.
You are correct, sir.
Flagging a ship in the US and procuring a US crew, however, is expensive.
But so is paying ransoms for those who fly other "flags of convenience."

I think a quick look at history will show you that the French are more than willing to resort to military force against terrorists whenever the French government believes that it is in French intersts to do so.
  • Rainbow warrior
  • Toulon hijacking
  • Op Turquoise
The trick is getting the French to believe that using force is in their best interest. Once they are convinced, they are quite willing to use force. And French forces are very capable.

A big thumbs up to the SEALs. Think about it, guys: Three simultaneous headshots, with targets and shooters in different boats in rolling seas, AT NIGHT. That in itself should give the pirates something to think about.
