Multiyear Arctic ice is effectively gone

Share

Not to disappoint those eagerly awaiting my next global warming warning (say that one fast 3 times) post:
OTTAWA (Reuters) – The multiyear ice covering the Arctic Ocean has effectively vanished, a startling development that will make it easier to open up polar shipping routes, an Arctic expert said on Thursday.
Vast sheets of impenetrable multiyear ice, which can reach up to 80 meters (260 feet) thick, have for centuries blocked the path of ships seeking a quick short cut through the fabled Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
But David Barber, Canada's Research Chair in Arctic System Science at the University of Manitoba, said the ice was melting at an extraordinarily fast rate.
"We are almost out of multiyear sea ice in the northern hemisphere," he said in a presentation in Parliament. The little that remains is jammed up against Canada's Arctic archipelago, far from potential shipping routes.
Scientists link higher Arctic temperatures and melting sea ice to the greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming.

On the bright side, by opening up shipping routes, maybe we can get our cheap Chinese junk even cheaper.

So the shorter sea routes will mean less fuel burned by tankers and cargo ships, which cuts CO2 emissions, which should cut GW!!! This is a win-win!

I still get a laugh out of all the "We have to do it for the polar bears" commercials that are still being run (I've actually seen more of them in the last month). If saving the planet is your thing, fine. But please, try to use an argument that hasn't been completely discredited.

i think you are onto something- the global warming and cooling cycle is actually correlated to just the greenhouse gases produced in trying to get through the arctic region. a long time ago when the ice was thick, polar bears put in a lot of effort to traverse the region. so they farted a lot and warmed up the area. then once it was ice free, they stopped traveling across the area, hence no farts, and the ice grew back. i say we need to make polar bear credit swaps, and then perhaps just kill them all and use an artificial fart machine to regulate the area.

No, it has been factually documented that polar bears are not dying off because the ice is melting. Actually, the population has remained pretty stable, or even grown. However, people keep predicting that they will all die based on yet-to-occur evidence. That is called putting the cart before the horse.
