Just got back from taking my three-year old around the neighborhood.
Best stuff: the good candy bars (Snickers, Baby Ruth, etc.)
Worst: a coupon, black licorice
When I was a kid .....
Best stuff: candy bars, pixie stix
Worst: potato chips (not in a bag, but a handful of loose chips), a Bible (nothing against the Bible, of course, just a lame statement on a kid's holiday)

Bye bye, Daddy. Drive carefully. Watch out for monsters and roboks. - Lily (age 2)
Mrs. VJ took our daughter along with some other parents / kids around our neighborhood. I stayed at home and gave out candy. Mrs. VJ bought a box of ActII Popcorn Balls. I tried one before giving them out. Yuck! I may as well have given them Quaker Rice Cakes - it was horrible.
I managed to get rid of them, but the kids I gave one to - I gave them a Snickers of 3 Musketeers also 'coz I felt sorry for them. And other people were handing them out too. I looked in kids' bag or jack-o-lantern or whatever and if they already had one...I just couldn't bring myself to bless them with a second one.
When I was a kid we all headed for this one old lady's house over on 4th street. She handed out huge homemade sticky popcorn balls wrapped in Saran wrap. No way most folks would let their kids eat them these days unless they were good friends of hers.
When I was a kid in the 70's, the best treats were full-sized Hershey's bars and the two-pack of Reese's peanut butter cups (yes, there were several houses in the neighborhood who gave those out every year) and homemade cookies wrapped in Saran wrap. And, yes, we ate those cookies with abandon, with not a single fear of dying from poisoning.

California was a blast! They really decorated the houses for Halloween in our neighborhood. It was down right scary! I don't remember the candy at all.
Memphis, TN was scary, but for different reasons. You were afraid to eat the candy. Too many kids poisoned, and two kids hurt by razor blades hidden in apples. After the second year, my parents skipped on the TorT, and we got candy, popcorn and a movie and stayed at home.
Alabama - I was a bit older, so it was more about TPing people homes and running around all night. A lot of fun.
I got bags of candy, but really can't remember exactly what types. For me, the memories are of the other things listed above.
My kids trick or treat all over this small town, and they bring in a huge haul every year...
This year, I bought bags & bags of the mixed candy bars at Sams (Almond Joys, Reese's PB cups, KitKats, Whoopers & Hershey Bars). The kids seemed to love them and so did my hubby!
When I was little, folks in my neighborhood used to pass out homemade popcorn balls -- and we never thought twice about eating them!
We live way out in the country, and there aren't many kids in this area.
We keep a bowl of candy out for those that do stop by though. This year, not one Halloween visitor, so once again we'll be nibbling from the bowl ourselves.

I've lived where I am now for over 10 years - right in the city, in a condo - and have NEVER had a 'Trick or Treater' knock on my door. I think these days parents are having parties at home, their church, or maybe the "Y" rather than letting the kids go around the neighborhood.

The kids were rolling through here until about 6:30, then we had a down-pour and that was it. I am left with a bunch of candy this year. The good news - my wife only buys the good stuff. The bad news - to keep my kids from eating it all, I will have to dig in...
