What's all the fuss about? After all the noise over Democrats' push for a government insurance plan to compete with private carriers, coverage numbers are finally in: Two percent.
That's the estimated share of Americans younger than 65 who'd sign up for the public option plan under the health care bill that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is steering toward House approval.
Quote:
The budget office estimated that about 6 million people would sign up for the public option in 2019, when the House bill is fully phased in. That represents about 2 percent of a total of 282 million Americans under age 65. (Older people are covered through Medicare.)
Re: After all the fuss, public health plan covers few
We could probably just purchase insurance for those 6 million and come out out a good deal cheaper than a $1.5 trillion bill (which will probably end up costing 2 to 5 times that), that is a gift to trial lawyers, taxes the heck out of everyone, kills HSAs and FSAs, accelerates health care costs, and makes it cheaper for businesses to pay a fine than to offer insurance to its employees.
This bill is, quite frankly, disgustingly insane.

Come on. I hope that you guys are being obtuse. The people covered under the public plan represent only a small portion of this bill, or its costs...

Then why don't we just try to cover those unable to obtain insurance instead of trying to commit utter insanity?

You know, the only thing that I wanted out of this bill was a measure that allowed people with pre-existing conditions to have access to affordable insurance. This allows for that. I had also hoped that this would create a government panel to decide whether or not a procedure should be covered by a policy, but that was dropped, so we will continue to get illegally denied claims and access to care.
This is a sad first stab at this, but we needed to do something. I hold out hope that we will dig in further over time...

Just trying to offer information. You know, with enough information at your fingertips, even you might come to understand why this was necessary...
Well as you said about Sowell, this has holes all in it. You know as well as I do that these estimations are never correct. They haven't been right about Medicare or SSI or anything I can think of but somehow we're supposed they will get it right this time. This information is nothing but something that politicians can try to sale us a big bag of crap. Once employers figure out that it will be cheaper to pay the fine to the government than to insure their employes they will stop providing them with insurance and they will be forced onto the public option.

First stab? This is at least the Democrats' 3rd stab at this since Obama has taken office. It has only gotten worse.
And I don't accept the "we needed to do something" argument. A bill this bad is much much worse than not doing anything at all.

No, too many people die every year because of our healthcare system. I know a few, personally. Nothing is worse than doing nothing when you know that people are being murdered except something that would kill more...

Then you just argued against this monstrosity of a bill.

People die in every type of healthcare system man has come up with and sometimes it is because the system fails. How is this bill going to stop insurance companies from refusing care. It won't, it will just give control to the government.
