Victory for GOP in Virginia and New Jersey

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091104/...s_election_rdp

WASHINGTON – Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell's victory in the Virginia governor's race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie's ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Maine voted on whether to affirm a state law that would allow same-sex couples to wed. If supporters prevail, it would mark the first time that the electorate in any state endorsed gay marriage.

And voters chose a congressmen in the GOP-held vacant 23rd Congressional District seat in New York, where Democrat Bill Owens led in the early vote count over conservative Doug Hoffman. That race highlighted fissures in the Republican Party and illustrated hurdles the GOP could face in capitalizing on any voter discontent with Obama and Democrats next fall.

Re: Victory for GOP in Virginia and New Jersey

Thank goodness Corzine is gone. I didn't think it was possible for a governor to run the state deeper into debt than the crew that he replaced. Sadly, I don't see much of a difference from Christie, but it can't get any worse, can it? (prays)

Re: Victory for GOP in Virginia and New Jersey

The White House is attempting to marginalize the Republican / Conservative victories. It's not a repudiation or a rejection of the Democrats' performance since January. Rather, they're referencing an abscure stat that in Virginia, since 1977, the governorship has always gone to the opposing political party of the one who just won the presidency the year previous. Like there'd be something amiss if Virginia didn't elect a Republican.

It they're hanging their hat on that trivial snippet, why even put up a candidate in the election, if it's a foregone conclusion that a Democrat had no chance to win, because it didn't happen in 1977, 1993, and 1997?

It was far from a foregone conclusion in NJ. States don't get much more Democrat than this one. Obama, just a few days ago, said that NJ was a critical state to win...

The NY congressional district was a good roadmap to the same defeats they suffered in the past two elections. All the sniping and in-fighting.

Kudos to the GOP for running candidates that brought in the independents. I doubt that either had the endorsement of the extremists with the bullhorns, though.

I suppose not. They were too busy cuddling and keeping each other warm at the state parks in Maine.

Please, Scuzzyfuzzy was not even close to being a Republican. How she ever got where she was is a mystery to me. She was farther left than the Democrat. All of these people in the White House calling her a moderate is rediculous and then for her to endorse the Democrat after proclaiming she was all Republican. If you are all Republican, you don't endorse the Democrat.

He is someone who alot of people claimed was dead but somehow he came back to life and won Virginia and New Jersey. Well I'm not sure if you can call winning New Jersey actually winning but that is what he got.

And if Doug Hoffman had gotten Scuzzyfuzzy's votes, he'd have won. Why was her name still on the ballot when she had dropped out?

It was probally too late and too costly to make new ballots. I bet this did have an effect though. Not sure who it would have helped or hurt. If someone was not informed enough to know she had dropped out, what political affiliation would they have been?

Re: Victory for GOP in Virginia and New Jersey

The funny thing that strikes me is that reports from the White House were that Obama was not watching the election results. Yea right Obama nose was mere inches away from the TV all night long.
