The latest Army statistics show a stunning 75 percent of military-age youth are ineligible to join the military because they are overweight, can't pass entrance exams, have dropped out of high school or had run-ins with the law.
Re: 75% Of Young Americans Unfit For Military Service
i laughed when i saw this. i thought they loved taking overweight people and running them til they made it or quit. how fat must you be before even the military wont bother with you?

Sounds a lot like the results of someone that never had to earn anything but was handed everything. Unfortunately we have no one to blame but ourselves. We've raised'um that way.

Re: 75% Of Young Americans Unfit For Military Service
Yeah, my boys are both fit - in fact, most of the kids up here are fit, but we live up in the hills. When we go to the mall (about 25 miles closer to NYC) we are amazed at the size of the kids (obese).
If the military is required to take these kids, they will lose the weight. Also, how well they score on tests is over-rated in most combat situations. Soldiers in a modern army need to be able to think, but most of their training is directed toward getting soldiers to act a specific way in a specific scenario without much thought. Book smarts are not much help for the standard grunt.

Most of my family is overweight and obese. Sorta what motivated me to go in the opposite direction. I'm the healthiest eater I know and are in the gym 4 days a week minimum. My brother who is overweight just had a kid and I caught my parents (his grandparents) feeding him crap like hotdogs and what not and I just hope and pray he doesn't turn out like the rest of Alabama's youngins.

Honestly, I wouldn't want 75% of the young Americans of today protecting our freedoms anyway.
You might be surprised at the change in them after a year or two. The military turns boys into men. IMO, we should go to two years of mandatory service...

Sure hope we don't have a massive call-up.
Speaking from personal experience form last weekend, there are a lot of young people who are overweight, and many are, shall we say, not as durable as young people when I was a cadet at Alabama.
Too much time spent in front of the video game and not enough out in the woods hunting, fishing, hiking and looking for swimmin' holes, etc.
I would not worry too much, however. A mis-spent youth can be overcome with enough screaming.

Fortunately, all three of my boys play a lot of sports and the video game systems are tucked away in my closet due to grades anyway.

I agree.
I thought long and hard about joining the army out of high school, but eventually decided against it because I felt it would put me too far behind career-wise. Plus I have to admit, the knowledge that I would most definitely get shot at by crazy muslins wasn't exactly the greatest encouragement to join (esp since I knew an older guy on my swim team who got killed).
