Experience out here tells me that doesn't necessarily mean they were soldiers, but...
And, maybe I just did speculate..
They were. Shep Smith on Fox News just reported that. The main shooter was a Major upset because he was being deployed to Iraq soon. He also has told us that the main shooter, who was killed, had converted to Islam. Oh well - what else is new? His name hasn't been reported yet.

A name now..
Quote:
A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan. The official said Hasan, believed to be in his late 30s, was killed after opening fire at the base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
The official says investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name, or if he changed his name and converted to Islam at some point in his life.

This was no excuse for an officer in the US Army to start killing other soldiers. He should be put in front of a firing squad himself. He doesn't deserve anything less.
Was the Muslim being deployed also? If so, why did he get mad enough to go on a shooting spree? Or was the Major's actions just an excuse for him to start killing other US soldiers?
Now tell me again about this "peaceful" religion called Islam.......

The Muslim is the Major and he was killed. They haven't said who the other two are for now, or atleast I haven't seen it. For anyone who has spent time in the military, this is a sad day. Well I guess it is sad whether you've been in the military or not but there is a connection for those who have spent time in the military and this is the ultimate betrayal.

They've also reported that he was a psychiatrist. I'll reserve comment on that for now.

No need to reserve your comments.
Psychiatrists usually shoot themselves, not others.
I'm sad to hear this. Having been a military psychiatrist, I can say it is a small community. It is also typical for psychiatrists to be overlooked too easily when it comes to assessing active duty members' mental health.
Sounds like he didn't want to deploy because he was conflicted between his religious beliefs and his duties as an officer. Obviously, he would be very heavily harrassed by his superiors because of that, which is likely why he was taken out of Walter Reed and sent to Hood. He likely owed time to the military, so they couldn't separate him or just easily get rid of him like they can an enlisted man.
Awful, awful, awful situation. I hate this.

The biggest question I have is why did he not just shoot himself and let it go at that? Why did he have to go on a rampage and kill others, making his own death inevitable? Of course, that's what I ask about most people who decide to kill other innocents before taking their own lives. Such a waste.....

The tragedy is all of this could've likely be avoided if his chain of command would've had him adequately assessed for dangerousness instead of assuming he was no risk just because he was an officer and a doctor.
Given what we're hearing thus far about this guy, I'd say he should've been placed in a non-deployable billet while the legal wranglings unfolded. Court martial him for refusing orders, make him pay off (with money) whatever obligation he may have had left on his contract, and keep him far away from as many people as possible (whether that be in the brig or a hospital, whichever one would've been most appropriate).
Of course, it's all Monday morning quarterbacking.
I feel horrible for the families of the victims. The hospitals are asking for blood donations. I fear the number of dead will continue to rise.

If he felt that way, so why in the name of good sense did he join the military? The draft no longer exist.
Too bad for those that he killed and injured. Awful.
Money.
Kids enlist and officers accept commissions every day for signing bonuses, benefits and education. Doesn't make it right, but I used to see it every day for the 15 years I was active duty.
Besides, regarding this guy, we don't even know how long he was active duty. He may have accepted his commission prior to our country going to war. There were plenty of people who naively joined in peace time, only to be shocked when our military actually started doing what it was created to do.

It's sad to say, but you're exactly right, we take way too many things for granted. He should've been accurately assessed by the higher ups like you said. The families and everyone on base has my sympathy, I'll be praying for them.
