For all the Golfers

Anybody here play much golf? Thought we'd get some good golf discussion going on. Name your favorite course, your best score, and the clubs you play.

Favorite Course: The Woodlands just north of Gulf Shores was an unbelievable course. I played it every chance I got whenever I was in the area. I've never seen a course that set up so well for me. Unfortunately they bulldozed it and built condos. Currently, Cypress Lakes in Muscle Shoals is my favorite. Great value and beautiful course. I played several times this summer and I can't recall playing a course that was in better condition. It was in better shape than either RTJ courses and even Turtle Point. If you get the chance and you haven't played Cypress Lakes, you've gotta go.

Best Score: I shot a 73 at Valley Landing out near Courtland, Alabama. I had a birdie putt on 18 that could have gotten me to even par, but it just missed. 4 birdies and 5 bogeys.

Clubs: I've had the same clubs since I was a Sr. in High School. I saved and saved and finally had enough to afford a set of Ping ISI-K's. They are pretty forgiving, but have a small sweet spot. It took me forever to get comfortable with them, but now that I have, I feel dialed in every time I have them in my hands. I've got a Ping G2 8.5 degree driver, no woods (can't hit 'em.) Ping Tour-W Wedge set and a Ping Zing2 Putter. Yeah I'm a bit of a Ping fanatic, but I haven't found a club they make that I don't like. I play with Bridgestone e6+ balls. They're pretty comparable to Pro-V1's but they don't scuff as easily, and are a lot more durable. I highly recommend them to anyone who plays Pro-V1's. You'll love 'em.

So let's hear it. Where do you play?

Re: For all the Golfers

I play pretty much any course I can in Atlanta. Some of my favorites are Bradshaw Farm (good course north of the city), Bobby Jones (decent course for under $40) and Chateau Elan (GREAT course). There's a also a couple of executive courses near the office that I like to play.

Best score - 91. And that was a few years ago at a course in Tampa.

Clubs - I have two drivers that I alternate between - Callaway X360 and Nike SQ Dymo. Both are pretty nice and really fun to hit. I've got some old Hippo irons and I am in desperate need of new ones. I use an Odyssey 2-Ball White Hot putter. I'm sure I have some woods but I never use them because I have zero control when I hit them.

Re: For all the Golfers

I don't play nearly as much as I would like to. We've toyed with the idea of joining this place Gates Four - we live about a half mile from there, but I'm not sure if I am going to be here long enough to make that kind of an investment. Still, joining someplace is probably the only way I will make myself play, and therefore, improve, consistently. There are plenty of places around our area to play, and we live only about 30 mins. from Pinehurst, NC. If NC is known for a few things, it's known for banking, basketball, stock car racing, and golf.

Here's a site I like that gives a lot of pics of courses I'd like to visit some day.

I currently play with a Taylor Made Burner Plus driver. I won earlier in the year in a Captain's Choice tournament, a Taylor Made R9, but haven't taken the time to figure out the weight distribution thingey. I'm using a set of Cleveland Gold irons, and an Odyssey White putter. I think my favorite club is a cheap Ram utility club. That thing is scratched and scuffed to hell and back, but I hardly ever use the 3 or 4 iron anymore unless I'm hitting out of some thick rough.

Good thread, RedStar.

Re: For all the Golfers

I haven't gotten to play many courses, but I play the most at what was Panther Creek golf course (now Ozark CC) here in Ozark since I only live like a mile away. I actually used to work there, which is why I started playing golf. But I think my favorite course is Roundabout Plantation..

My best score was an 85 at Ozark CC. I was hitting very good that day, but typically come no where near that.

For clubs I use a Nike SQ Sumo 2 for my driver, and an Odessy 2-ball putter. My irons are a cheap set of Rams that I picked up while I was on a very strict budget in high school lol. I need some new ones but I know exactly how they hit so I'm kind of partial to them. I do have a Nike sand wedge that is automatic

Re: For all the Golfers

I haven't played a whole lot since I left my job where I got to play a lot of customer golf.

As for courses, primarily public... I like White Columns, Chateau Elan is nice, The Orchard in Newnan has a certain charm... many of the RTJ courses in Alabama are very nice.

My favorite course of all was the course I learned to play on - Tama Hills, about 45 minutes from Tokyo Japan. It is/was a course for the American military Beautifully maintained by the Japanese. Only course I've ever played that had two greens on every hole - a winter green and a summer green. Different grasses to suite the weather in either season.

Best score, 81.

I play a set of Titleist DTs that I got about 15 years ago, and a Cleveland Launcher drive and 3 wood.

Re: For all the Golfers

My clubs are a bit piecemeal, but they work for me. Of course, like most golfers, I always drool over new clubs in the golf shops.

I play a TaylorMade R7 Limited driver (anniversary present this year from my wife), Tommy Armour Silver Scot Woods & Wedges, Tommy Armour 845 Irons, and a TaylorMade Daytona Putter.

My favorite course is the Schoolmaster at the Robert Trent Jones in the Shoals. I've played some pretty good courses, although nothing exotic, but that course is my favorite.

As for scores, my best score is an 80 and, in the past two years, I've shot that at Blackberry Trail, Turtle Point, Cypress Lakes, and Cypress Bend at Craft Farms in Gulf Shores. I've never broken 80, and had three birdie or par putts on 18 this year to do it and missed all three. On the bright side, I'm now a single digit handicapper!

Re: For all the Golfers

My best score ever was a 77. I typically shoot around bogey golf.

Favorite course: I would love to play Augusta, St Andrews, or Sawgrass. My favorite course I have played is either Bear Trace in Crossville, TN or Rarity Bay in Vonore, TN

Clubs:
Driver(s) Ping G10 and Ping Rapture...of course I have a Smokey head cover
3 wood: Hogan S455...I think that is the model number
5 wood: The Perfect Club...best gimmick club I have ever seen
Irons: Titleist 704CB
Wedges: Titleist Vokey 52* and 56*
Putter: Odyssey White Hot blade
Ball: Maxfli Noodle or Top Flite Gamer

One of the things on my bucket list is take my dad to St. Andrews. I didn't know this until a sunday school lesson a few weeks ago, but the apostle Andrew did a lot of mission work in Scotland, hence the golf course was named after him. Pretty interesting.

How are the Vokey wedges treating you? I had a friend who found a 56* Vokey at a consignment shop for $5! I've never been so fortunate. If I ever get rid of my Ping's I've thought about looking at the Titleist Irons. What do you like about the 704's?

I played it once and shot a 93. It was awful. Great course though. #14 is one of the neatest holes I've ever played.

My best score is a little deceiving. It was legit, no mulligans or anything, but my best score before that was an 81. I don't know what got into me that day, I'm typically around a 10 handicap.

I had an Arnold Palmer utility club I bought at Wal-Mart for $1 on clearance when I was probably 14 years old, it stayed in my bag for about 10 years before I wore it out. I hit it more consistently than any other club I've ever owned! It's weird what clubs end up being your favorites.

I think wedges are a lot like putters, they are all about feel and not much difference in the good ones. I have had Nike, Cleveland, and Titleist. I think they are all about the same...I just like mine to match (make and model)

I have had three sets of Titleist irons: 2 sets of 981s and the 704s. IMO, Titleist makes the best irons on the market for a golfer of my level....90ish golfer most of the time. The 981's were probably the best irons I have ever had. You can probably get a set of them on Ebay for $100...the are probably 10 years old.

Now if I can just find the driver that makes me hit it straight

Re: For all the Golfers

Well, being out in California, the nicest course I have played is Castlewood. I know none of you know it, but it is a very nice private course that my friend is a member at so I was able to play a few times. I shot an 82 once on the hilly course which is very difficult. As for clubs, pretty standard, just some older mixed clubs like Nike TaylorMade etc.

Re: For all the Golfers

I just recently moved to Meridianville, Al a block off the Colonial Golf Course. Bought a cart and plan to play a lot of golf in the near future. Will retire in a couple of years. Haven't played a lot this year. Trying to get house to my liking.

Favorite Courses: Enjoy playing Trent Jones courses. Have played most all of them. (Son played the RTJ Jr PGA one year) Not fond of their 3 tier greens but love wide fairways. Played a lot of golf at Sunset Landing, Hsv Muni, like playing Point Mallard, Southern Gayles. RedStar, have played Valley Landing and I enjoyed it. Good course. Vacation in Destin a lot. Like playing Kelly Plantation, Emerald Bay, and Regatta Bay. Went to Orange Beach last year and enjoyed playing Perdido Bay. I'm Envious of Relayer. Have never played a course outside of USA. Would love to do that someday.

Best Score: About a 13 handicaper. Not a great golfer but hardly anybody enjoys it more than I do. In college (UA in 70's) shot in upper seventies back when the University course was a 9 hole course and they were expanding to 18. If I remember right I thought I was getting robbed when green fees went from 35 to 50 cents with my ACT card.

Clubs: In the last 3 years I have attended 3 weeks of Club Repair and fitting schools at GolfWorks in Ohio. So I am partial to all Maltby Clubs and have most all of them (Before that I was partial to Callaway Clubs). When I retire would like to get into the business or more like a hobby to keep busy not to make money. Have bought thousands of dollars of equipment however most of it is still in boxes after the move. Haven't got shop set up yet.

I use a 9.5 Degree Maltby CT 250 driver. I use Maltby 3,5,7,and 9 Trouble Out Woods. The 5,7,and 9 woods I use like 2,3,and 4 irons. Getting old and the extra shaft length gives me more club head speed. I use Maltby KE4 irons (5 thru pw). They have weighted screws in head so swingweights can be adjusted easily. Can't believe I am agreeing with a VolFan but I to agree that wedges are like putters. What feels good is the right wedge and I think they are a lot alike.

Good thread RedStar.

ThumbsUp Re: For all the Golfers

The best course I have ever played was the LPGA International Legends course. It was just an awesome site driving to it. I ended up shooting a 92 but I was dang happy with that. I live in east Tn so the 3 courses I play the most are, Elizabethton Golf Course - Elizabethton, Tennessee
Clear Creek Golf Club
Crockett Ridge Golf Course

As others have said I would love to play, Augusta, Sawgrass, and or Pebble Beach!
My best score is a 76 at Elizabethton my home course, that was about 15 years ago lol. I quit playing for about 10 years or so and got back into it about 2 years ago. Since getting back into golf the best I have shot is an 82 and I was happy with that. I guess I'm a Callaway man that is about all I use except my Ping putter.
F-T 5 driver 10 deg., with a BIG AL head cover!
x20 irons 5 thru, gap wedge
F-T 3,5 woods
F-T 3,4 utility clubs
Ping iwi Anser putter
-----------------------------------
Very cool thread thanks for starting this one.
Oh here are some pics I made before on how I mark my Titleist balls, I mark all my balls with the script A but with Titleist I always underline Title!
