....my wife and I have a 3 year old bundle of energy named Brodie; he's a Yorkie-Poodle mix. Little guy is a lively, full of spirit, joy to have. He somehow tore up his knee so we've got some options: (1) let it heal itself with almost guaranteed problems down the road (2) fix it with surgery.
Now to my prayer request: We know that if it's in our power to keep him from suffering (and he's in pain) then we have the responsibility to ease his pain. It's obviously not something you would put a 3 year old dog down over, so we know we're going to pay for the surgery. But (1) it's going to cost at least $600 and possibly more depending on the damage (2) I still have this "thing" of "it's a dog for crying out loud." (3) even though he's just a dog, he brings us a lot of joy and we love the little guy; it's hurting me to watch him in pain.
I know dogs aren't as important to God as we are, but they're still God's creatures. We don't eat them, we don't use them for labor, so I think they're tools to help us laugh and to feel loved and to learn how to put other's needs above our own...I don't know if that's how God intended them, but that's how we use them; at least my wife and I do.
Please pray that the financial burden won't crush us (and it won't), and pray that my wife will not get too upset during the process. And also pray that he'll heal well and get back to his old self. He's a spirited, lively dog and he's just not himself right now. Again, it's just a dog but my wife is more torn up than I am. We don't have kids yet and maybe your view of the family dog changes once you get kids, but right now he's our little buddy and he needs us to help him with his injury and the pain he's going through.
We had a gray shorthaired cat named Cinder that had a severe allergic reaction to a vaccination, which we thought might kill him. He swelled up so big his collar had to come off, and after the vet administered some sort of antihistamine, he told us to keep an eye on him at home. Well, he got worse, wouldn't stop vomiting, blood was coming out of both ends, and he could barely move. The emergency animal clinic got him sorted out with a plasma transfusion, and he pulled through. It wasn't cheap, but fortunately, I was in a position to absorb the cost. If I recall correctly, they did offer some sort of payment plan to ease the financial burden, but I declined. You might try to find out if your vet/surgeon offers something similar.
bamanut_aj, from my old days on TI I remember when you got Brodie and the best I recall you posted a pic of a little bundle of fur! And I truly believe God cares about his creatures as much as he does his humans. It sounds like in the long run, it would be cheaper for Brodie to have the surgery now (to repair the damage) than to deal with continuing problems down the road. As one poster said, many vets/animal clinics have payment plans - my late old dog had to have surgery ($1200) that I put on a credit card. Took me a while to pay it off but the reward was worth it. We'll remember Brodie in our prayers and say a prayer or two (g) for you and your wife.

As long as you can afford it , do it . If I were a rich man , I'd have provided my cat a transplant . Instead , I have an "individual cemetary" with a small tombstone in my mothers back yard right where my cat used to seclude herself .

yes, you remember correctly! And yes, we can put it on a credit card that we have or we can do "PetCredit" and take 12 interest-free months to pay it off. I'm over the financial eye-opener, now I've just got to keep 'mama' from going insane...this is tearing her up!
Not such an odd prayer request. Remember when Barbaro, the race horse, was injured? I asked my Pastor to pray for his recovery. I said, "Someone has to pray for the animals".
So, I'll pray for your pooch to have the surgery, get well, and live happily ever after, and without sending his humans to the "poor house".
P.S. I think God does love HIS animals as much as us humans. After all, he created so many of them.
Good luck!!!

we got a 2nd opinion from another vet this morning (long story about why we felt we should get a 2nd opinion, but suffice it to say that we did not feel as though the first vet was very thorough).
Anyway, small breeds are prone to have a knee disorder that basically puts things a little out of alignment. We have absolutely no rush to operate, and in fact, a round of anti-inflammatory should take down the swelling that occurred a couple weeks ago when he hit his knee and first starting the occasional limping. That's a far cry from "at least one torn ligament, possibly two............"
Thanks for the prayers! We're both a lot more at ease both in our concern for the dog, and our finances!!

Glad to hear your pet is better! Our collie/pointer mix had to go to the vet to day, as he has had trouble standing and walking for the last few days. My daughter and I were readying ourselves for some possible tough news, but as an earlier poster stated, I also believe God cares about His creatures great and small. It turned out he had simply bruised himself pretty good( probably playing and bumped something) , and with the help of some anti-inflammatory meds, should be back to his chase-everything, bark-at-everything self in no time. He may have a little arthritis, but he's only 5, so the vet thinks it would only be in the very early stages.
I do pray for the best for you and your family, including the furry members!!

I had a wonderful cat that somehow developed an ACL injury (yes, a cat). Of course, we had it repaired to the tune of $550.00 - and was worth every cent. Basically a month to recover -- but after that, he was as good as new!
Just a year ago, our sweet cat was mauled on our back porch by a stray dog. Loved that cat though and would do it all over again.
