OK, ladies & gents, (forgive the separate thread; merge as needed)
Today's the day for the next part of exiled's (not-so-)excellent medical adventure.
It's surgery day today. In about an hour & a half, the Dr. will cut 3 small incisions under my left arm & insert a camera & a knife into my left lung. He's planning to (quoting him) "make my left lung disease free" by removing 3 lesions + a wedge around them. Sounds really cool; especially if it were happening to someone else! Word is, this is much like laproscopic surgery, say, to remove gall stones (except that it's in the lung & is to remove what are believed to be cancer spots...)
Thus, he said we'd know decisively and pretty much instantly what in the wide world of sports these spots actually are. That info, of course, determines the future course of treatment.
I'll prolly be in the hospital until Sunday, or perhaps Monday. (Sunday's our preference if possible) Home to MS Sunday (if we get out early) or Monday.
Dr.'s words on recup were "you'll be sore--as if you were in a barfight & got stabbed 3 times..." but that I'll be pretty functional this coming week. Medical technology is pretty amazing these days!
Anyhoo, I will have computer access, & will update. (Though perhaps not today; you've heard of "drunkblogging"? Methinks "gen'l anesthesia blogging" would be similar...)
Thanks so much for your prayers & notes of encouragement, my Crimson amigos! Here's hoping I can scream "Roll Tide" in a disease-free way soon!

At home now (having just completed the most glorious shower...my 1st since Fri. a.m.!) Note to all concerned: I have bathed since then, but today was 1st shower allowed.
Got released from hospital Sunday around lunch time, and felt great that afternoon & evening.
Then came yesterday...a day where I felt really bad pretty much all day. Apparently, Monday was the day when my systems began adjusting to not being connected to the various devices of the previous 3 days. And not all turned back on at the same time...mrs. exiled drove home (Dr.'s orders - no driving for 2 weeks), which was a very long iteration, given that I had to stop every couple of hours & walks (Dr.'s orders again). I fell deeply asleep nearly every hour for half an hour or so.
But a marvelous night's sleep last night, plus more of my systems rebooting, and I've felt pretty good today! Even went & walked for half a mile this morning. (not much, but I'll take it for 4 days after lung surgery!). Then came home & napped. Not entirely my fault though; our dog + exiled, jr.'s new puppy both went to sleep, thereby sucking all the oxygen out of the room. I was forced to lie on the floor & crash...
Surgeon said the operation achieved what he wanted; removed the lesions from the left lung. We find out the pathology results tomorrow. Hopefully, we also find out the future course of treatment those results indicate.
So, on balance, I'm doing well. Not able to teach class tonight (Dr.'s orders again), but will be back up & around soon.
Thanks so much for your prayers, amigos! Please keep 'em coming for just a bit longer & maybe our road will straighten out a bit.

you're well on the way to having this thing licked. It'll be a good day when we can give the middle finger to all these illnesses and diseases. Until then, keep fightin'!
ANOTHER UPDATE: Got the call from M.D. Anderson today. Pathology on the 3 lesions removed show that they are, in fact, metastatic melanoma. It's back, in other words, after 2 1/2 years of being "gone."
No word yet on future treatments yet. Should get that phone call tomorrow. Today's was just "here's the pathology results hot off the press." The lady who called was going to email the results to the 2 medical guys we've met with (thoracic specialist & a melanoma specialist).
Bummer of a diagnosis...Have I mentioned this--USE SUNSCREEN, BOYS & GIRLS!! I didn't, and thus created a genetic history of melanoma where there was none previously. *sad smile*
My Lord is still on the throne, presiding over the lives & times of men & of nations. But still, I'd greatly appreciate your prayers even more now. Please remember mrs. exiled, and our 19-year-old son & 17-year-old daughter, who have to take this journey with me.
Will update when I hear more about the future treatment stuff.
Thanks so much for praying on behalf of one you've not met. We're forever grateful! Roll Tide!

(is anyone besides me concerned that I keep posting in my own thread? )
The future is still unknown, BUT...got phone call #2 today:
--June 26 - back to MDA for "re-staging" scans (CT/xray/bloodwork)
--June 27 - meet w/ Dr. Homsi the medical melanoma dude (**this appt. will present future treatment details**)
Prayer points:
--accurate scans & bloodwork that shows no spread of cancer outside of my lungs (a huge prayer point, actually)
--peace for the exiled tribe until then
--wisdom for Dr. & others on the treatment team
Thanks so much for your prayers, amigos! I promise not to update any more until...well, there's actually something to update. Thus, prolly nothing new here for 3 weeks. (Did I mention that no spread outside of lungs is a pretty huge deal? Yeah...thought I did...)
Optimistic & hoping to stay that way,
exiled
