Midnight Madness traditions in danger
Is it time to say good-bye to Midnight Madness?
Maybe. Among the nearly 150 items proposed to pass into NCAA law for next year is one that will change when NCAA Division I basketball teams can begin practice, from the current ''Saturday nearest to Oct. 15th," to ''7 p.m. on the Friday nearest Oct. 15th."
That ''Saturday nearest" rule allowed some basketball-crazy schools to go out, in a show of dedication, at 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning. Over the years, those first minute practices have been turned into basketball events, with fans being invited into the coliseum to await the striking of midnight, a practice that then begat more and more elaborate entertainment for those fans waiting for the first minute of NCAA-authorized practice.
But NCAA legislation (No. 04-45) being proposed for next year would do away with the tradition of ''Midnight Madness," and it's a proposal that is likely to be adopted, in spite of tradition, for several reasons.
One is that it makes sense. Teams get to take the floor at 7 p.m. — a reasonable hour — and have a full practice.
