OXFORD, Miss. -- Sophomore left-hander Brent Carter allowed three runs over 7 1/3 innings to lead No. 21 Alabama to a 7-3 win over Ole Miss and even the weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series Saturday afternoon, in front of 2,029 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Ole Miss won Friday's series opener 10-2.

Carter (6-4) overcame a shaky start to shut down the Rebels after allowing three runs in the first two innings. He finished allowing the three runs on nine hits and two walks to earn the win.

Trailing 7-3, Ole Miss loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning to chase Carter from the game. However, Brian Reed would end the threat by striking out Jonathan Swearingen and coaxing Seth Smith to ground out to second. He then worked a perfect ninth to record his 10th save of the year and tie the Alabama school career record with 19.

An Ole Miss error to start the game opened the door for two Alabama runs in the first. The Crimson Tide then added three runs in the top of the second, highlighted by Allen Rice's two-run single, to build a 5-1 lead.

Brian Pettway answered with a two-out, two-run single in the second to pull the Rebels within 5-3.

Alabama would add a run in the fifth on a Travis Garner RBI single and another in the sixth on bases loaded walk by Eric Fowler to Nathan Meiners.

Anthony Cupps (3-2) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits and three walks before being lifted after 1 1/3 innings.

Alabama out-hit Ole Miss 12-9 on the afternoon and the two teams combined to strand 27 runners on base. The Crimson Tide left 16 on base and the Rebels 11.

Beau Hearod, Rice and Zac Welch all had two hits each for the Crimson Tide. Pettway was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and Smith went 2-for-4 for Ole Miss.

The two teams will play the rubber-match of this weekend's series at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Junior right-hander Seth Johnson (5-1, 2.63 ERA) is scheduled to start for Alabama, while freshman left-hander Stephen Head (1-1, 1.02 ERA) is slated to make his first career start for the Rebels. Head has recorded eight saves this year in 11 appearances, setting a new Ole Miss freshman record.
