Chris Browder

Hawk, I'd read that he had been told that Bama was "3 deep" at DE and he had a chance to start at Auburn as a freshman.

I don't think he was that big of a loss. His speed in the 40 (4.9 seconds) is a little slow for a DE. For a DT, that's pretty good speed but for DE, it's not that great.

IMO, Demarcus Johnson "decommitting" was a much bigger loss. Bama desperately needs help at DT and he could have been some instant quality depth there. I know there are other juco DTs out there but now CDF is having to scramble a bit.

Did Bama even offer a scholarship to him or did he just "commit" to Bama earlier in the year?

We seem to be having trouble recruiting true DL types ; almost all the kids we have seem to be "converted" DE's.Sure hope CDF has some in mind, 'cause everyone's shopping cart seems to be filling up pretty fast! In years past, 'Bama always had some of the best DL in the country....It was almost a tradition ; can't understand why we can't get them now.

Information on Browder:8. CHRIS BROWDER, DE/LB, 6'6, 215, 4.8, Camden Wilcox-Central HS, Camden, AL. (Committed on 7/19/2001) - Chris is very very quick for his size. He held his own against Tide Freshman, Von Ewing last season in a game. As a junior, he accumulated 109 tackles and 19 sacks, while playing DE & LB. The Tide has recruited Chris as a DE. Browder chose the Tide over Auburn and Ole Miss.

Browder committed to Auburn after initially being a Bama commit. He wasn't expected to qualify academically and there are other DE possibilities that will. He possibly could partially qualify, but likely will go the JUCO route & be recruited again. We have 11 verbal commitments that will qualify - l (Tatum) is a DT. We'll very likely sign a JUCO (J. Williams) and J. Clark, plus Tatum, all DTs. The final 6 will likely be Williams, Clark, LB D. Ryans, and DE either Harmon or Kendrick (if Grubbs is not available). If WR Obomanu is available, we'll take him; if RB Wynn is available, we'll take him - end of story. If one or the other only is available, the other slot will go to a WR or DB, likely either Gallegos or Broussard. This entire scenario is very likely based on recruiting info from several Bama boards.
