Technological foul
Quote:
But texting has proved to be an essential lifeline from one teen to the next to the next to the next. They send shorthand messages with the sort of thumb-speed that seems a paradox in the same body that otherwise runs at a snail's pace.

It has also been a lifeline between college recruiters and prospects. But that line gets scissored, or at least put on hold, as of Wednesday. The NCAA has banned all text and instant messages to recruits. It's a change in what had been a drastic change in the game of recruiting.

What will that mean?

Good. I'm glad this has passed, at least for now. It seems to me that text messaging was probably so out of control that it bordered on harrassment. And I like that HS coach that talked about it affecting his players in the classroom. I had never considered that angle, and it is probably the most important one of all (although the NCAA cares so little about academics I'm sure they completely overlooked it).

I agree 100%. We often get so carried away in the competitive spirit that we forget we are talking about the recruitment of high school students, most of whom will never make millions in the NFL and will need an education to make a living like the rest of us.

Along these lines--I find the trend of certain basketball coaches to recruit junior high school kids as kinda creepy, too.

OMG!... Text messaging dies

On August 1st the NCAA no longer allows college coaches to text message prospects – a landmark decision which will affect the way recruiting is conducted from here on out.

“We had better start writing letters – personal, handwritten notes during this time frame,” said Richt at SEC Media Days last week in Birmingham. “There's 30 days (in August) where we don't want to get whipped and lose momentum in this recruiting.”

Re: Text messaging: Technological foul

I'm sure they'll come back and revisit text messaging. Probably come up with rules like no text messaging during school hours and limit the number of text messages that can be sent per week or something.

Re: Text messaging: Technological foul

I think the rule is awful. Coaches and their staffs have way more to do then sit down and write nice letters. Why not just limit how many texts you can have. Maybe the athletes could tell the coaches when to text them. Hell, these kids are texting all day anyways.

After all, it was the Ivy Leaugue that petitioned against this rule...The freaking Ivy League!
