Newly hired head coach Larry Fedora, and in particular ace recruiter Tony Hughes (formerly on Ed Orgeron's staff at Ole Miss) took the recruiting world by storm in a short amount of time, landing five-star receiver DeAndre Brown, four-star offensive lineman Bo Tillman and, in total, signing more top-25 in-state players (eight) than SEC counterpart Ole Miss (four), which hired its own new coach, Houston Nutt, earlier than Southern Miss hired Fedora.
Not bad, considering they had their coach to (ahem) resign. The Tony Hughes hire was a good move by them, too.
It doesn't mean much on a national scale, but in this state, USM's recruiting success puts more burden on Ole Miss and especially MSU.

Yesterday on CSTV during Tom Lemming's Generation Next NSD Special USM's head coach CLF personally thanked Coach O for training some of his coaches to be good recruiters. Coach O was a special guest commentator on Generation Next for the NSD show. The fact that some of those coaches had been in on a lot of the prospects whem they were at Ole Miss really helped out with USM signing such a good class. Also the fact that Southern Miss can accept partial qualifiers helped on some of the prospects, especiall DeAndre Brown one of the top WRs in the country.

I think it's the sole reason they signed Brown and Tillman.
