I just wish all of you knew just how hard Kerry has tried just to get to this point. He loves Alabama and wants to play here more than anything. We ought to get behind this young man and wish him the very best in his studies and his football career.
Agreed! Get with the books, Kerry, we need you.
I love players who love Alabama.

Murphy may have had some academic issues and I'm sure he must take responsibility for that but I for one ALSO fault programs like Hoover that recruit in these kids to win them championships but do not use their vast resources to help these kids who often come from difficult situations. I feel safe in calling out Hoover specifically because of the number of players we recruited from there that did not initially qualify. The state championship trophies are nice but I question if perspective was not lost in that program. I hope its improved since they got a new coach.

SIAP (I'm not going to read all seven pages), but he's listed as enrolled now, with a UA email address...

I completely agree with you on this situation. The fault is not with the players but the Hoover HS administration and coaches.

I know circumstances are not always the same, but you believe that fault is not with the players? Only the Administration and teachers/coaches are the ones at fault? Hmmmmm. It just hit a nerve since I am a high school teacher/coach. I have to respectfully disagree for the most part.

Ultimately Murphy is responsible for himself, and I hear your frustration, My sister is a teacher as well and I hear how difficult the situation is, I don't blame the teachers, I blame the coaches, If coaches would simply hold them to a higher standard and demand they do well in school in order to play then most would reach those standards I promise you, But we don't pay the coaches to teach we pay them to win, So I guess in retrospect the fault is the entire town's to bear. They are the ones who demand the wins and demand the guy get fired if he doesn't reach their expectations.

Obviously, Hoover's academics have not always been concern #1. Rush Propst was fired for tampering with grades among other things. Hopefully the new coach at Hoover will do a better job of incorporating a sense of academic urgency among the players. The earlier post shouldn't hit a nerve with you unless you helped fudge the grades. The earlier poster wasn't talking bad about teachers in general, just a specific case in which academic improprieties were proven to be true.

Obviously there is a personal responsibilty in every situation like this. There is fault with the players and players parents that were involved. However, you don't allow the inmates to run the prison do you? I place the bulk of blame of the Hoover situation directly on the Hoover HS administrators and coaches that were directly involved. They are the ones who's job it was to educate those students properly. They are paid and intrusted with taking care of and doing what is best for the high school students/athletes while they are in HS. I have to assume that they fostered and/or allowed the systematic problems that led to the abuses that reportedly occurred. The bulk of the responsibilty has to fall on those administrators and coaches involved in my opinion.

Nick Saban was in Athens, AL the other night having dinner with the Ming's (William has signed with Bama). While here he met with Coach Creasy (Athens High football coach) and chatted for a while. Saban told him that for 9 scholarships that we have left, he is recruiting 30 people to fill them due to them potentially not being eligible.. He said that all the team rankings for recruiting classes should be thrown out the window, because academically this is the worst recruiting year he has seen in his entire coaching career- and the top class might not have a single player from that class end up being able to play due to this. Thought that was some pretty strong words and good insight into everything that has to be looked at in recruiting.

A certain lady close to me teaches in a high school that has one of the most prominent football programs in the state of Alabama. This past football season her class was naptime for one of the most prominent members of the team. He was much more active come game time. Sort of tragicomic, isn't it?
