The latest on Mississippi wide receiver Pat Patterson is that he has dropped both Alabama and LSU from consideration, or more precisely, they dropped him. Patterson said he hasn't really heard from either one in a while, and now Tennessee is in the mix, though it still seems like he is Ole Miss bound.
Either way, though, I think it's interesting that we've pretty much stopped recruiting him. Now that it seems like Chad Bumphis will probably end up at Mississippi State, that really narrows down our wide receiver board to a handful of guys: Rueben Randle, Kendall Kelly, and Marsalis Teague.
I really don't think we'll get Teague, so that really leaves only Randle and Kelly still on the board. Many were thinking that we would take two more wide receivers, and if so then that must mean we feel great about our chances with Randle, or we're perhaps going to be content with taking only one more wide receiver in this class.
Either way, the wide receiver board is shaping up. Norwood has committed to Alabama, Patterson is out of the picture, and Bumphis will probably end up at Mississippi State. Things are starting to at least make a bit of sense now.

Rodney Orr thinks we are the leader for Bumphis. From what I gathered I thought he was MSU bound as well. But he has mentioned he thinks even after the hire it is 60/40 Bama. Supposedly Bumphis' mom loved Sly so she that will play into the decision. We shall she. Though I would black out from excitement if we finshed with Randle, Kelly, Norwood, and Bowman as our WR class.

No clue honestly, other than the staff apparently just didn't like him as much as some of the other guys. I don't really have any doubt that we could have gotten him had we really put on the full-court press. Obviously he was very interested in us...
I suppose it means that we either feal really good about someone else, or we aren't signing as many wide receivers as previously expected. I imagine that means we are either feeling really good about our chances with Rueben Randle, or we are probably going to take only three wide receivers in this class.
At the very least, it's pretty good news for us. You don't start turning away kids like this one unless you feel really good about your chances with some other prospects higher on the board.

EDIT: (1/03) Patterson is now showing interest in Bama and added back to the Prospect lists.

After the all-star game just like Kevin Norwood, Patterson was raving about Alabama commit QB A.J. McCarron. I also do not know why Bama has cooled on Patterson. It just seemed they never really did have him rated that highly on the WR board.
Here is the Bama Mag article with the Patterson update info.
Although he now denies a leader, Patterson says he has narrowed it down to Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Auburn and Tennessee.
LSU and Alabama were previously in Patterson's top five as late as early December, but he admits that they are no longer recruiting him. "I haven't really been hearing from them anymore," he said.
"I want to take my four visits for sure," he said. "I probably won't commit until close to signing day.

Reason: Added Patrick Patterson back to the prospect list since mutual interest has developed and he is now visiting Bama on (1/09)

re: WR Pat Patterson Update (01/06): He is officially visiting Bama Jan. 9th
Teague committed to UF yesterday and UT is now in the mix for Bumphis along with Patterson.... Both have visits scheduled late January.
Still, you should be very very satisfied if you land Randle and Kelly out of your initial group of hopefuls, IMO... Especially with your limited scholly's.
re: WR Pat Patterson Update (01/06): He is officially visiting Bama Jan. 9th
I'm getting the oddly unappealing feeling that it'll be Kelly and done.
Not that I don't think Kelly's a great prospect; better to say that, looking at the WR board of a few days ago, he would've perhaps been the least appealing of the prospects in terms of possessing what we need from our WR recruits. Obviously, the staff feels differently... or Bumphis isn't such an MSU certainty as is being assumed, or better still, things are looking good on the Randle front.

After PP's very impressive performance in the US Army All American Bowl, do our coaches take another look at him? He still lists an official with Alabama on 9 Jan.

The announcers during the game said he was considering Alabama. Has something changed recently?

I think that's a given at this point, and I believe it's already happening.
He was completely off the radar screen, but now he is going to be taking an official visit to Alabama, so we are interested in him once again. I do think we can probably have him if we want him, but after this I think his recruiting race is really going to heat up in the next few weeks. Tennessee will probably come hard after him too.
I hope we can get him. In my book, which isn't saying much, he ought to be the #2 wide receiver on our board right now.
Randle has already taken an official visit to Oklahoma and he has lined up trips with Oklahoma State for Jan. 9 and Alabama for Jan. 16. LSU is the other program still in the running for his signature.
"I'm down to those four," Randle confirmed. "I can't wait to make my decision. I wish I knew now. But it takes time, so I am not going to rush it.
Patterson has yet to take his first official visit. But he has lined up trips with Alabama for Jan. 9, Southern Miss for Jan. 16, Ole Miss for Jan. 23 and Tennessee for Jan. 30.
"It is going to be a busy month," Patterson said. "But I feel like I want to wait until I take all my visits before I decide."

re: WR Pat Patterson Update (01/06): He is officially visiting Bama Jan. 9th
If you look at Scout.com, Randle's visit for Alabama has been removed from both his profile and also the visitor list for that weekend. I don't know what the deal is there, I haven't seen anything about him cancelling it.
Either way, this is a big recruiting weekend for us. Kirkpatrick, Richardson, McCarron, Patrick, Myles, and Patterson will be in town this weekend. It'd be nice if we can really jump in front for Patterson, and it'd be even nicer if Tana went ahead and pulled the trigger.
