There were some rumblings, but I'm not sure it's that big of a deal.
After all, he was committed to Florida, and you have to give Urban Meyer credit, he doesn't sign anyone with academic question marks. The guy has put together four recruiting classes at Florida, and has only lost two guys as academic casualties.
I highly doubt Florida would have been on him like they were if he probably weren't going to qualify.
Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. Especially with Georgia on him so hard after they didn't offer Bowman just because of his grades.

Is that really true? I thought he signed > 30 guys each of his first 2 years.

According to Scout.com, they signed 18 in Meyer's first class, and 27 in his second class.
And I believe that is correct. At the very least, that is what they said last year when Dee Finley didn't qualify. He was supposedly the second academic casualty of the Meyer era.

BET,
How much of this pursuit of Greg Reid do you think could be 'tit for tat' or retaliation for UM's full court press on our man Trent Richardson?
I'm not BET but I'm sure it's moreso that we're looking for another CB rather than the "tit for tat" scenario. We only have West that's committed and there's talk that he may not qualify/de-commit to USM.
re: ATH/CB Greg Reid Update (2/03): He is announcing his decision tonight
According to Rivals Saban made a visit to Reid's home today and it went just as great as the official. His mother loved the meet and he says we're in great shape. Hopefully the infatuation with this week of the Bama experience will be strong enough to get him to choose us next week. Maybe the FSU crew will do something to tick him off or something to make that happen

It doesn't hurt that his recruiting base, Florida, has very well funded school systems for academics throughout the state. I'm sure the same statistics are true of Big Ten schools and Pac 10 schools.

Nick visited Reid today and Reid really seems to like Saban. He also talks about how much he likes Javy and how they are good friends. Richt is supposed to be in town soon then he has his official visit to UGA. He will announce his decision on Tuesday. Lets hope he likes Tuscaloosa more than Athens, my gut says hes a Dawg.

I also see where he'll announce on Tuesday.

I forgot to mention one thing that Reid said that makes me think he is headed else where. When talking about Javy he said "we're good friends, we will always be good friends." When I hear that to me it says, "we'll always be good friends even when I go to FSU or UGA." Also UGA will need to make an impression because Reid really likes FSU and its a lot closer than Athen or Tuscaloosa. It will come down to his visit. I personally HOPE he ends up at FSU.

A true testament to this staff's ability to recruit, as of today, it's neck and neck with us and FSU. UGA would have to pull something special to change him, though it's possible.
We offer the best situation for him, and he knows that, now. However, distance, pressure, etc could play the ultimate factor.
re: ATH/CB Greg Reid Update (2/03): He is announcing his decision tonight
after reading the article about Saban's visit yeaterday- I really feel we are a major contender - don't count this one out! momma likes Saban and that is huge!

I don't believe they are related in any way whatsoever.
Florida has been hard on Richardson since day one, and we haven't came on Reid strong until very late in the process. In fact, we didn't become a truly serious player for Reid until after he eliminated Florida.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure our staff would love to stick it to Meyer (as would most other SEC staffs), but that's not what is at play here. We desperately need athletic DB's, Reid opened up his recruitment and showed us some interest, so we returned the favor and starting putting on the full-court press for him.
