Due to contact by Sly Croom in September, which overstepped the visit limits, the NCAA has declared Bumphis ineligible. The violation is a complete joke, much like the "Nick Saban Rule" insituted this past spring. I'm not sure how the NCAA thinks coaches are supposed to act when a player greets a coach in public.
Quote:
In an Oct. 10 letter to the Southeastern Conference, MSU self-reported a violation that it said occurred on Sept. 8 in Tupelo. According to the school's letter, Bumphis "came up behind Coach Croom and grabbed his shoulder" when Croom was visiting with the Tupelo coach. That would violate an NCAA bylaw that limits the amount and nature of contact coaches have with prospects.

How ridiculous. I would hope he would be reinstated.

Well you would have to certainly hope that the NCAA reinstates his eligibilty as MSU has requested. I can not see punishing Bumphis personally for something that the previous coach Croom did. The violation was self reported so that has to go in their favor. I expect to see Bumphis get reinstated.

Typical NCAA garbage...
At any rate, I imagine Bumphis will be reinstated relatively soon. I wouldn't be surprised to see MSU, if their compliance department is half as serious about this as ours is, suspend him for a game or two to open the 2009 season, but I wouldn't expect much more.
Either way, this is all absurd, and frankly any punishment given out will be merely to appease the NCAA and nothing more.

Huh?
Yep, poor guy obviously has the wrong player in mind, but by his comments I can't even figure out who he thought he was talking about
And Bumphis should be reinstated, no doubt. It still just strikes me as odd how these tiny instances can bring action by the NCAA, but things like the Reggie Bush scandal just get swept under the rug.

If this happened anywhere but in the south the NCAA would look the other way. If Bumphis had went to another school would the NCAA have done anything?

Second the question...had Bumphis signed with another school, would he be ineligible?
It's all speculation, of course, but you cannot help but wonder if the outcome would have been different had the school in question been different. Mississippi State has been in the NCAA doghouse before, and it hasn't been too long since the football program came off of probation.
Given the ridiculous inequalities of how the NCAA doles out punishment, you just cannot help but wonder if that had something to do with it. At the very least, the NCAA has a long history of elevating some while stomping down on others, and such a bogus "violation" like this one certainly raises those questions when the punishment becomes so severe as to put a player's eligibility in question.
