Enrolling early means one full off-season in the 4th quarter program, a full spring camp, and quicker familiarity with your teammates and staff. I don't know if he'll start as a Freshman, the quicker he gets on campus the better. It will definitely payoff down the road even if not immediately.
If all goes well (McElroy holds the QB position down and wins games), the real QB competition will emerge in 2011. Star will be 4th year Junior, AJ a 3rd year Sophomore, and Phillip will be a 2nd year Freshmen heading into his second full off-season. That is going to be some kind of QB competition, something I don't think we've seen at Alabama in years.
I have thought that when John Parker Wilson enrolled early, and thereby got that extra spring practice in, it of course said several things. This young man is serious about learning the quarterback position at Alabama. It puts him way ahead of other QB's in his class. It says a lot for his high school coaches (Probst, master of the passing game, undoubtedly encouraged John Parker). It augers well for this man's future at Bama. Plus that, he is apparently more physically gifted as a passer than was John Parker. John Parker Wilson was rewarded for his diligence by his fellow players when he was elected permanent captain. Phillip Sims is on the right track.
if,,,, (yes, small if),,, Coach Mac can develop QBs with the impact he had on JPW it will be a sight to behold. DCs will be saying "whatever you do don't hurt the QB. No telling what they have on the bench!"
