It is being reported that incoming freshman S Rod Woodson recently underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery but that he will be physically ready to go when he reports to the team. As of right now the grayshirt, redshirt rumors are not true. Short of something unexpectedly happening this summer, Woodson will participate this season.

I read the TI article today on Woodson also. This is excellent news. I think Woodson can make a huge impact on special teams this year and ease into the defense and get more and more playing time at safety as the year goes along.

Sorry for jumping in a couple threads so late, I haven't been on the boards in a while. But, I've seen Rod around tuscaloosa, and talked to him a couple days ago about his shoulder. He said that'll he has had his surgery and will be ready to participate this fall at UA.

Re: Rod Woodson to Grayshirt?/ S Rod Woodson Update (6/24)
Seeing as how this guy came to Bama with a reputation for being what Coach Bryant referred to as "a contact football player," I am glad that we may be able to see him play some this year. I guess others noticed Mark Barron like I did last year for his work on special teams, but that guy is a "contact football player" too. Probably "collision football player" would be the better term for such players as these.
This is the kind of football player who goes through more than one set of shoulder pads, and might even bust a helmet or two. It is not surprising then that he would also bust up a shoulder.
I remember the question being asked years ago in some non-sports publication, "In which sport -- boxing or football -- is a participant more likely to get injured?" The answer at that time, I guess, was supposed to be surprising -- football.
I have longed for the day when SEC defensive backs would get back to what Shug Jordan referred to a "hell-for-leather, helmet-busting football." "It's the only kind of football that will win in the SEC," he said, "since Bryant came into the league." Then Steve Spurrier came into the league, and 99% of SEC defensive backs, it seemed, became so concerned about the speedy wide receivers beating them deep that they seemed to forget about "laying the wood to 'em" anymore.
That's one reason I'm glad that Saban is primarily defensive-minded. Actually, we had a defensive-minded head coach in DuBose, but his DB's seemed to drag a lot of ballcarriers down as if they were playing defensive end. Under Saban, our defense has gotten pretty unpleasant for the other teams' offense.

I think he had to have ankle surgery at the end of the season, but it something that should be heeled by fall. I have to say though, that with all of his injuries, I wouldn't be too upset if he redshirted just to give extra rest and learn the system and have more eligibility at full go. But if he's ready to go, he's ready to go and I certainly wouldn't mind that guy on STs

Yeah, that sounds familiar to me too? Anybody remember that and know how his foot is doing?

Woodson had a pretty bad high ankle sprain last year in the playoffs. I cannot remember specifically off the top of my head, but I don't think he had surgery.
At any rate, the ankle isn't expected to be a problem now. He should be fully healed from that and good to go.
