Strengths: Sims has tremendous arm strength and natural wrist velocity. He is physically well-built and very strong with adequate height and great feet. Sims can make every throw when his feet are set. He also learns quickly and applies lessons on the next rep.
Areas for improvement: Like so many prospects in attendance, Sims needs to work on his drop depth from center; his balanced setup and delivery mechanics are inconsistent. He carries the ball low from center far too frequently. He also needs to be more consistently accurate.

I am very happy this young man will be in crimson, but for some reason I've conditioned myself not to get overly excited about incoming quarterbacks. This is the only position that I am so reserved about.

I agree. Seems like everybody we get at quarterback are supposed to be something special when they sign. Either injury, inconsintency or lack of a good line to protect them has hindered their performances. Phillip certainly has the goods, but so did a lot of others. I quit counting the number of times JPW got sacked the last 2 years. I hope with some combination of DJ Fluker, J Carpenter , Juwaun James, Tyler Love, Barrett Jones, JM Boswell, Vlachos, and the rest of line they put together can give Phillip the room he needs to improve into the one of the greats. He will have to beat out MCarron and Jackson. Based on what I see, he can do that. RTR!!!
If Alabama commit Phillip Sims (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) can continue to improve his drop speed, depth and consistency from center, he has a chance to develop into the total package. His physical tools are excellent. He was great on the board in the classroom setting, and he shows tremendous arm strength. He has good feet, but not great footwork. He needs to focus on gaining depth immediately from center, especially with his first step. Montana was a great asset in the area not only to Sims, but all the Super Seven, as few people drop from center as smooth and effortless as he does.

I can't wait to see him participating in spring drills next year. I'm really excited about the future of the QB position with Star, AJ, and now Phillip Sims.

Coach Bryant, after announcing his retirement, was asked if he was dissappointed that an Alabama player had never won the Heisman Trophy while he was the coach. He said, "No!", and added, "At Alabama our players do not win Heisman Trophies, our teams win national championships."
As Leinart took the field, he recalled being a part of a similar retreat when he was in high school and spending time with six of his peers who are now in the NFL with him: Kyle Orton, Derek Anderson, Kellen Clemens, Brodie Croyle, D.J. Shockley and Ingle Martin. He reminded the Super 7 quarterbacks that gathered around him that this was the beginning of their journey and that perhaps five years down the line they could look at their group photo and say they had all made it to the NFL as well.
"It's important to take advantage of this time together and compete against each other," said Leinart. "I guarantee each one of these kids has heard about each other or read about each other, and now is their chance to see how they compare and what they need to work on. They're not rivals here; they're just here to get better."
While each quarterback got better during the camp, learning how to drop back from Montana, follow through from Leinart and elude the blitz from Moon, there was always a friendly rivalry between the quarterbacks during drills and even afterwards as they raced around the hotel's pools and debated football over Oceanside meals.

What I really like about Simms is he is truly committed to Alabama! He is not wavering, knows what he wants to achieve and is helping in our recruiting process! He seems to be a true team player and that is what it takes to win championships! I cant wait to get this kid on campus!
I heard Bill Walsh talking one day about how a quarterback should be able to rhythmically move back from and up towards the line of scrimmage like Joe Montana had done. Walsh thought at the time, if I remember correctly, that if he could teach Jake Plummer, he could make Plummer into a great quarterback along the lines of Montana.
I have always thought that Montana was in the upper 99 percentile when it came to being a smart quarterback. He was not that physical, and he by no means had the greatest arm strength. He knew how to MOVE in and out of an onrushing defense, and how get the ball off when it looked virtually impossible to do so. I'll tell you who he reminds me of, now that I think of it -- Alexander Alekhine, the great chess player. There was no understanding how Alekhine would position himself, in the midst of the opponent's attack, but then, all at once it was Alekhine seemingly coming from nowhere to attack the opponent. That was Montana. He could so position himself with his feet that he made it look easy. He made it look so easy against the Saints that I groaned every time the Saints played the 49-ers -- I knew it we were in for another Sunday evening of his making the Saints look silly.
