Hoover High School rising senior wide receiver Gerald Bryant saw his opportunity to shine with the Bucs driving down the field with less than a minute remaining against Fairhope in Saturday's championship game of the National Select 7-on-7 tournament.
Bryant gave Bucs fans plenty to cheer about as he hauled in a go-ahead 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Carter to give Hoover a 22-18 lead in the final seconds Saturday. The Hoover defense held Fairhope on the next possession and the Bucs came away with a 24-18 victory to claim their third National Select 7-on-7 title in nine years of hosting the tournament.
Fairhope earned a second-place finish at last weekend's National Select 7-on-7 tournament in Hoover -- a run that included wins over Hoover, three-time defending Class 6A champion Prattville, Evangel Christian (La.) and Plant (Fla.) -- and that served notice that Fairhope will be tough to tame this year.
Fairhope running back Jamal Woodyard is the team's best prospect, having amassed more than 3,000 all-purpose yards as a runner, receiver and kick return last season. He could end up in the SEC.
