How I rank them . LOL . Honestly , beyond build and skill set , what I look for is not seen on any highlight video - how a prospect responds to failure and how they interact on the sidelines with their coaches and fellow players . And , as always , it's the offers , not the stars .

The offers are irrelevant. Just because some other schools want to get a guy thats not relevant to your squad. Let me put it this way just because a lot of schools haven't got FB depth and are all offering a certain guy, but your school has 3 good ones with plenty of eligibility left then you wouldn't offer that guy. There's tons of different schemes were a guy with less stars may fit better.
However, I wouldn't use some star system to dictate wether or not I offered a guy. I would have to go with a self-evaluation system. Either from game film(s) or camp or a combination of both.
I think one big factor is to look at "when" they got their high star rating.
Alonzo Lawrence, although now transfering was a very good example. He was pretty much under the radar until the latter part of his senior year. When Bama offered he jumped from a 2 to a four star in a matter of weeks.
But because he was an unknown for a long time he didn't have that big of an offer list.
Ideally though I think you want the kid with the big offer list and the big star rating combined with a high ACT score!
I look at offer list before stars, but before that I'm concerned with a coach's specialty.
With Coach Saban, if he wants a DB I feel very comfortable that he's pretty good no matter the offer list or stars or whatever. I felt the same was about WRs and QBs with Shula. Obviously some didn't turn out like maybe we wanted, but DJ Hall and Keith Brown were both 2 star WRs that played above that level. Same goes with McElroy vs. Smelley when there was that big discussion after we whiffed on Tebow. On the other hand, I was never comfortable with Shula's choices in offensive linemen....
I look at the stats of a recruit when he`s going against an opponent that the majority of their players won`t be working at the Burger King the next year. In a nut shell...how well they play against a team with equal or better talent.

So to sum it up, neither.
So , since you are not going out to watch and evaluate close to 4000 prospects on an annual basis , whch indicator would you favor ?

I think you build depth by going after the best year after year. Look at what Bama is doing. Look at what USC does. Both of the teams go after the top players every year. By doing this, the offer sheet gets bigger and bigger.
Alright, what did I miss? Is someone messin' with VolFan1??? You didn't brag about your post count did you??? ^^^^^

You talking about my "new" Bama avatar? Not sure where it came from.

Sometimes not even a star rating or offer list does a recruit justice..I'll just use Morris Claiborne from last year's class as an example because he's fresh in my memory. He's only a 3* kid, and other than LSU the only "big time" schools to offer him were TAMU and Nebraska..with Tulane, LA Tech and Arkansas State rounding out his top picks.
By all accounts, though, the guy has been performing at a high level (arguably better than Rueben Randle at this point) so far and looks like he'll be a good player on either side of the ball.
Sometimes you just have to take the coaching staff's word for it, I think.
