Sometimes not even a star rating or offer list does a recruit justice..I'll just use Morris Claiborne from last year's class as an example because he's fresh in my memory. He's only a 3* kid, and other than LSU the only "big time" schools to offer him were TAMU and Nebraska..with Tulane, LA Tech and Arkansas State rounding out his top picks.

By all accounts, though, the guy has been performing at a high level (arguably better than Rueben Randle at this point) so far and looks like he'll be a good player on either side of the ball.

Sometimes you just have to take the coaching staff's word for it, I think.
And as fans of our respective teams, we have to trust our coaching staffs to evaluate talent.

Neither can account for "late bloomers" - guys who don't really develop until much later in their high school career. With recruiting stuff starting to dig earlier and earlier, it can be hard for a guy who doesn't hit that growth spurt or add weight until senior year.

Very true .... which relates to a staffs ability to evaluate and having the confidence to extend an offer which may leave some competitors scratching their heads . When FSU offered a prospect back in the 90's , no matter how they were rated , odds were the kid was more than a "sleeper" . I feel the same holds true today with programs such as Oklahoma and SoCal . At least their track records are pretty dang convincing .

Re: What impresses you more with a recruit?

There are 2 things for me that make or break a recruit.
1:Character
2:Talent

You have to have both because if you only have 1 of those 2 aspects then chances are your not very good to begin with.
Character encompasses morals, work ethic, judgment making skills as well.
Talent is simply your skill to play your position, natural ability, gut instincts... that type stuff. RTR!!
