I know the two usually go together, especially with 4* and 5*.
Would you rather have a 4* with your school being the only SEC offer or would you rather have a 3* with several SEC offers and offers from other big schools as well?
I am beginning to think the offer list is more important than the star ranking. JMO
When you're talking about getting a player among the top 100 players in America, you don't have to worry about his offer list, you know it was extensive. When you're talking about adding a lesser known guy (low four star and three stars), I believe the offer list becomes telling. Of course that's not always the case if an unknown prospect performed well at your program's camp.

I usually look at offer list and video (or if lucky getting to watch in person or on tv) to really get my personal evaluation of a player. And it usually comes in handy with players that are lower 4 stars. Which is kinda why I'm a bit shocked that a guy like Craig Sanders isn't ranked higher, he has a very impressive offer list and great video and I think the fact that he isn't in 6A school hurts too much. He's probably a guy that will have to kill it on the end of the year all star game circuit to get his credit

I agree with everything except for the videos. Aren't the videos typically put together by someone wanting the kid to look good? You are never going to see video of missed blocking assignments or fumbles.
I like to watch the videos and I guess if you know what you are looking for they are good for fundamentals and things that can't be made to look a certain way. The videos are definitely fun to watch, usually.
Like you said, if you know what you're looking for in technique and the basics. But aside from that, they can show a players general game speed and physicality (even though there are some instances where vids don't show that some of the players take plays off), and even if they are highlights they can show the players potential. Put that together with scouting reports, offer lists, measurables and stats and you've got a pretty good picture. But I think actually seeing the talent is important (better to see a full game, but still...).
You can tell by the compition he plays with and his video footage or highlights. If you watch the highlights you can tell who's overrated or underrated.

A lot of times what a player does when he is not directly involved in the play tell more about what kind of college player they will make. That is where the coaches film and camp evaluations come in over the highlight tapes.
Most of the time, the high (star) ranked recruits are very good players but they don't always take in character, team mentality, coachability and heart.....again, that is where the coaches evaluations come in.
Offer list without a doubt. Although often times we don't really know exactly how many offers (firm offers) a kid truly has, so the recruiting sites and their lists can be somewhat misleading at times. But if a kid has offers from programs like Alabama, Florida, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, etc. I don't care what he's ranked or how many stars he has, its a pretty safe bet he's a big time prospect.

I mean Jacob Hester was recruited by Saban was a 3-star RB and his last 2 years at LSU I dont think any college in the country wouldnt have welcomed him to play on their team. And there is this other guy that was a 3-star who broke the Alabama freshman TD record I think his name is Mark Ingram or something like that. It is all BS, I have even seen 5-star guys never see anything but the practice field. I think the most important thing to watch is how they do at the combines and camps. I mean what if a guy is 6-3 225lbs and runs a 4.3 but he plays for a 1A 2-9 HS team, say he is the only talented guy on the entire team. He is only a 2-star but when he gets to camp he lights it up. Then he turns out to be just like USC's Tyler Mays(not saying he was a 2-star) some freaky LB with CB speed. All I am saying is just never know either way with the star rankings.
Yeah, there are better ways to get your personal idea on players than others. But whichever way you do it, none of it is an exact science. Even guys like Saban or Carroll will have players they expected a lot out of (or would've ranked as a 5 star type guy) and got nothing from.
But when it comes to the original question of coaches offers, or the service's rankings (which in part do follow what coaches offered)...the coaches by far
