re: Does anyone know anything about 2011 prospect QB Stephen Rivers from Athens High?
Stephen Rivers is the younger brother of San Diego Chargers QB Phillip Rivers. He is a tall, lankey QB and at 6'6" and 185 lbs he needs to put on some weight in the next couple of years. He is a Bama QB prospect and even though his profiles do not list any offers, reportedly from some Vol fans, he already has a Tennessee offer. Those that have seen him play say that he is a very intelligent QB that is an accurate passer with a very strong arm that lacks good mobility. Right now it looks like he will be one of the top QB prospects in Alabama in the 2011 class.
ATHENS, AL. -- Steven Rivers, a rising junior quarterback and the younger brother of NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers, has transferred from Austin High School to Athens.
Rivers, 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds as a sophomore, started for the Black Bears as a sophomore and led the team to a 5-6 record.

I live about 30 min from Athens, and while he is constantly on the local news. I don't think he as good as his brother. I might be wrong but from what I have seen of him he's not Philip.

If you go back and look, Phillip Rivers was not that highly ranked either. Bama and Auburn both passed on him...tall and athletic, but with a funny delivery. He's only as accurate a passer as I have seen in college since Kenny Stabler and until Greg McElroy.

I watched him play Friday nite: Athens, is a 5A div school and they struggled against a 4A team (Brooks HS in Lauderdale county,Florence) and finally pulled it out with 2 minutes to go.He doesn't have a overhead release but close to a side arm. Being as tall as he is he can get by with some of that in high school but not colledge. As stated, he is fragile looking, you might say skinny.
That being said, most of the above can be corrected, except speed and probably mobility. This of course, is my honest opinion.

not that great of a football player....pretty good at basketball though, can make the jumper, use both hands, draws fouls and makes his foul shots.
People said similar things about Phillip Rivers. Considering the depth at QB Alabama will have going into 2011, I think we should take a chance on Rivers. Wouldn't won't to be on the wrong end of this one again.

I understand everyone's desire to sign Steven. I hope he is good enough to get an offer from our staff but I don't want, nor to I expect, our staff to sign him just because he is Phillip's brother and the fact that Phillip wasn't highly sought after but turned into such a good QB. Let's look at Steven with objectivity and let the chips fall where they may. JMHO. Posted via Mobile Device

I know UA/AU didnt recruit Philip, but did Saban? If I recall, Philip was in the '00 class and Saban was hired at LSU in the Fall of 1999...who all was Philip recruited by?

Phillip Rivers was recruited as a TE by Mike Dubose. Rivers enrolled at North Carolina State early. If Coach Saban recruited him, it would have been briefly.

Yeah, I knew about his recruitment at UA/AU, but I didnt know who else was after him (besides N. C. State of course).
