Now in regards to future spots open for the 2010 class I need clarification on something if someone knows the answer.
I know if a player on their on accord leaves the program the aid cannot be awarded to another player for that year. So if we have a few more leave to transfer otherthan misconduct purposes we can not back count players into their spot. See bylaw below. My question is a player that gets a medical redshirt will still receive a schoalrship for the year but it does not count against the 85 max allowed. If so does that also apply with a player that receives one during the season for that current year. I know they said DH might get one and I believe we had another player get hurt this season, not sure if they can redshirt or not(medical). If they can that opens up two more spots for early enrollees.
Just curious with some of the players looking at us now and we currently have 20 commited with the 2 JUCOs. I know we can sign up to 28 but we have some players from 2009 that were grayshirted and I can't remember how many of those have to be backcounted or counts towards 2010 class.
15.3.4.2 Reduction or Cancellation Permitted. Institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics
ability may be reduced or canceled during the period of the award if the recipient: (Revised: 1/11/94, 1/10/95)
(a) Renders himself or herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition;
(b) Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intent or financial aid agreement
(see Bylaw 15.3.4.2.3);
(c) Engages in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty (see Bylaw 15.3.4.2.4); or
(d) Voluntarily (on his or her own initiative) withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons; however, the recipient’s financial aid may not be awarded to another student-athlete in the academic term
in which the aid was reduced or canceled. A student-athlete’s request for written permission to contact another four-year collegiate institution regarding a possible transfer does not constitute a voluntary withdrawal.

How many players do we have graduating in December?
15.5.6.3.5 Midyear Replacement. [FBS/FCS]
A counter who graduates at midyear or who graduates during the previous academic year (including summer) may be replaced by an initial counter, who shall be counted against the initial limit for the following academic year, or by a student athlete who was an initial counter in a previous academic year and is returning to the institution after time spent on active duty in the armed services or on an official church mission. In bowl subdivision football, an institution may use the midyear replacement exception only if it previously has provided financial aid during that academic year to the maximum number of overall counters (85 total counters). In championship subdivision football, an institution may use the midyear replacement exception only if it previously has provided financial aid during that academic year that equals the maximum number of overall equivalencies or overall counters(Revised: 4/20/99 effective 8/1/99, 6/8/99, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 8/2/05, 12/15/06, 1/14/08 effective 8/1/08)

For the # we have to back count I knew at one time but I keep forgetting. As far as how many we graduate in December? But here is the eligibility for this year and on...Scout.com: Football Recruiting
According to Saban, he will not look to apply for a medical hardship unless both he and Hightower agree that it is in his best interest at the end of his eligibility. In other words, it will be 2 years before they even consider a medical redshirt for Hightower, so there won't be a backcount factored in for his scholly at this point...

Completely flew over my head with that one. I didn't think he was talking about about medical red-shirts(they still count towards the 85 do they not? it is just like having a true red-shirt player they are still receiving financial aid from there scholly). I thought he was just trying to figure out if the 10 Dec grads open up more spots in the magical 85 or if a player leaves voluntarily does this open up another scholly. As for the latter, the way it reads is academic term which is a quarter or semester, so say Dre decides to leave BAMA for somewhere else on Nov 25, his scholly really isn't available to be awarded to another prospect or grey-shirt until the spring quarter/semester starts, b/c it is considered a different term than the one Dre was getting scholly financial aid. That is the way it reads but...surf would prolly know more about it than me. But unless there are other factors to be introduced into your question then the 10 who are set to grad if they are scholly players and ones who leave willingly do open up scholly's that can be giving out the following semester.
Sorry tidewarrior if I misunderstood what you were asking.

I remeber reading a case involving USC and over commiting schollys, but they were not in trouble because the NCAA said medical redshirt does not count against the 85 limit.
National Collegiate Athletic Association concluded a month-long investigation Thursday and determined USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. did not violate scholarship limits in football.
Questions were raised over the summer whether the Trojans went over the limit after awarding scholarships to some incoming walk-on players last year. NCAA rules allow teams 85scholarships, but there is usually some juggling that takes place when players get hurt and go on medical-redshirt scholarships, which do not count against the limit.

That is interesting I didn't think that was the case...although is was USC the NCAA's darling of CFB. They might even change the rule on the fly just to accomadate BAMA, then change it back later if USC needs another won.

Not necessarily - see Jamar Taylor . The same applies to the previously backcounted slot vacated by Preyear .
When I have a little more time , I will re-type all of it , for the 3rd or 4th time , from A to Z and leave it up as a sticky
