HS Athletes and academics, are things this blatant?

Share

Just curious if athletics have become so important that high school athletes are given free passes with no regard for subtlety. I know it goes on but to what degree.

We have a very close friend who substitutes at a high school in Arkansas. This past week our friend went in to substitute a "remedial" English class where the regular teacher left our friend a note stating that if a particular football player is sleepy, let him sleep. Well, this player wasn't so much sleepy this day but distracted. Our friend, who is not shy about confronting anyone (this is a highly recruited player) was annoyed by a clicking noise coming from the player. Asked what he had, the player replied dice. Our friend asked him why he brought dice to school to which he replied to play craps and make some money. The player put the dice away but soon approached the teacher and asked to go to the coaches office. Our friend allowed him to go and he never returned.

Again, I realize this may go on, but have things gotten this "in your face" or is this more of the exception than the rule. At least when I was in school, the star players were either capable and willing to learn or were more discreet in their schooling.

I do not know if this is the right forum, but I thought since it involved star athletes being recruited....My apologies if I have put this in the wrong place. I was just curious to know how bad things are these days forathletes who either can't cut it in the classroom or do not care to try.

I think this has always happened with star athletes at small schools.

Yeah I have been out of HS for almost 10 yrs now and I was a starter for varsity in the 8th grade. It didn't what I did at school I never got suspended, in AL if you get suspened or sent to Alternative school(A-school) then you are ineligible to play on Fri. So I was always sent to in-school suspension taught by my secondary coach, I liked it in there better than in my normal classes. It is even more prevalent in the smaller 1-3a schools, b/c a loss of a key player at the wrong time could mean the st playoffs.

My experience is that this is not unique to athletes.

Thanks for the replies. Guess it's not that unusual just seems too upfront (of course, I guess it bothers me some that this player is being recruited by AU )

a little too much info is going to lead to guesses on who it is.... and that's not a road we want to go down.
