What if Mark Richt is fired after the season...

Share

I have to ask this question, because I believe there is a legit chance of it happening and we should be prepared. Obviously this would mean that their most talented recruits, who have lots of other offers, go to other schools.

Does it do good or bad for us in terms of recruiting? IMHO it does more harm. We don't play Georgia as often and some good players would go to Tennessee and Auburn.

Also, who do you think of their current commits would end up at Bama? I guess, Jakar Hamilton would be a nice addition. Anyone else?

Actually, our coaches may have to play dirty and start talking to players they want convincing them to switch. Not that I feel it's "right", but everyone does it. It's like a jungle law and you have to eat what's given. If we don't do that, others will. Lots of Florida State's commits already switched teams (two of them to Tennessee, btw).

First of all think of someone better than MR that UGA could realistically land after firing a coach with above average success in the nation's toughest conference. Secondly this staff maintains contact with lots of prospects that aren't coming to Alabama, its part of the relationship they build with them. Finally, we don't have to use dirty tactics in recruiting. Dirty tactics are for the teams trying to get where we are, not for this staff.

Richt set an early and very high bar on expectations at Athens. But even the slobbering delusions of the most rabid Georgia fans won't get him fired after this year. UGA's president is an egotistical loaded gun, but he's not stupid. If Richt leaves after the year, it because his former boss has asked him to take his place at FSU.

Re: What if Mark Richt is fired after the season...

Alabama is pretty full in this class, and the board for the remaining spots seems the same. However, things change, and if by some strange twist Georgia fires Richt, we might make a run on a couple guys. The state of Georgia is important to our recruiting efforts, so this staff most certainly keeps close contact to those commited and not.

There is no need for dirty tactics by this staff. Recruiting is an art they perfect, and they pay too much attention to detail to use alternative methods with these kids.

FSU has a coach in waiting.

Richt will be at Georgia but I would expect some changes in staff or assignments.

I would be more worried about us losing someone on our staff to UGA if Richt is fired. We have alot of big names that schools are looking at and I think Saban realizes a few will be replaced over the next few years. We have a few that would fit very well in terms of coaching at UGA. Recruiting might net us a few but that depends on the spots we have left.

Agreed. Richt will have to make a decision about his staff this year, and that will at least give him until next season to right the ship.

Their most obvious problem is defense, so I anticipate a run at Kirby Smart.

Re: What if Mark Richt is fired after the season...

I am most concerned with Kirby Smart leaving to go to his Alma Mater. UGA could certainly use him and the fanbase has been sick of Willie Martinez for a while.... I think it would take a few bad seasons in a row for UGA to get rid of Richt. They kept Ray Goff (some called him Ray Gump) around for 7 years

I seriously doubt that Kirby Smart would leave to be DC at GA. Maybe HC but I can see no situation where Richt is not retained. Remember they lost Stafford and Moreno who went early to the NFL.

I think the defensive problems have been there since Brian VanGorder left four years ago. Its just that Richt and Bobo's offenses have been good enough to mask the problem until this season.

I highly doubt Coach Smart would leave for another DC position too. I just don't want to hear the rumors if they do fire Willie Martinez.

Re: What if Mark Richt is fired after the season...

The word from sports talk radio up here, is that Richt is firmly behind Martinez and has no intention of firing him. But if their D doesn't improve in the 2nd half of the season I don't see how Martinez survives.

And I don't know what sort of penalty FSU would have to pay if they didn't promote Fisher, but it wouldn't suprise me at all if they took a run at Richt.

I agree. I don't really see how expectations cold have been too high with all that they lost. But I do think that our success this year has shed a negative light on MR from some of the pundits. They don't want to hear the "star QB and RB departure" excuse since we were able to adjust and not miss a beat.
