Re: Update...Mike Harris (JUCO) CB...talks of maybe an official visit to UA.
Don't know if I ever started a thread about it, but I've shared it with a few folks here. I'm familiar with this situation and have been since right after signing day this year. Mike Harris is a player. And he's ours if we want him. Only way he doesn't come here is if we don't want him. As long as the interest is mutual, expect to see him in Crimson next season.

He's got pretty good measurables...I like his speed, at 4.4 he wouldn't be the fastest guy around but is still a burner.

I'm pretty confident any JUCO player we look at will be able to come in and contribute like Cody & Carpenter have.

Did you just say 4.4 speed and he would not be the fastest around? How spoiled are we?

Yeah and we forget sometimes that they might not be accurate...I am guilty of that on some of my posts. I don't know why since I was a burner and track guy. His 4.4 time in the 40 could be on a bad day, we had another guy on the team, when I played, that also was a burner and some days he would beat me and some days I would beat him. Same thing in track, I had 100m times at 10.7 and 10.8 and the next week run a 10.2 and 10.3, so he could be even faster and most guys improve their times in college anyway. I know he is a JUCO but BAMA prolly has better running coaches than El Camino CC, just saying.

Plus, straight ahead track speed and game speed are 2 different kinds of speed. Running with pads slows some people down tremendously. Being a DB, his quickness in change of directions and acceleration is more important than straight line speed. Being able to run smooth to be able to still see the ball is crucial also. Some of our burner receivers in the past couldn't catch the long pass because they didn't run smoothly and couldn't pick up the ball.

Coach Saban has always had this policy. He did the same thing at LSU, and is continuing it at Alabama. If they can contribute early and often, their limited eligibility is worth the risk. Mike Harris and Devonta Bolton will certainly have opportunities to contribute early in 2010, with the losses we'll have at DB and LB, if they end up signing with Alabama. I'm not sure where Brandon Lewis and Alabama stand right now, as far as a re-sign is concerned.

True, we're not going to take a JUCO guy unless he can come in and immediately contribute (significantly). Time (among other things) will tell if the staff feels Harris is that kind of player or not.

D Bolton redshirted this year, so when he comes in January he will have 3 years of eligibilty left to play for UA. B Lewis is playing this fall and has moved inside to DT.

I knew Bolton was redshirting, and that's a very good thing. Although we lose some key guys in the LB unit, and Rolando may leave early, there is still some amazing talent on the roster. Bolton may need a year to acclimate, and with three years of eligibility left as a JUCO, that really helps him. As for Brandon Lewis, I'm surprised to hear he's playing. I would have thought that he would see the need to redshirt and preserve eligibility, coming in as a JUCO. Alabama, although losing Cody, is very deep in the interior defensive line. He'll have his shot, if he re-signs, but with only two years left to play now, he'll have to adjust quickly.
