With the recent speculation that El Camino (Calif.) CC players CB Mike Harris and WR Kenbrell Thompkins could be a package deal, does anyone have any more info on Thompkins?
Rivals ran a story back in August that said Thompkins almost committed to Florida in May, and that Alabama, LSU and K-State were on him the hardest.
Is Florida still his leader? Does he have a committable offer from us? Where does he stand?
The guy looks very good on film. And though we've been talking about it regarding current players and recruits for a year now, I still don't think we have a very threatening WR to play alongside Julio (not saying one of the young guys won't be great, but no one's there yet).

Bonehouse, I think you may have hit on something. Part of our passing game problems are the failure of our receivers to consistently create space. Maybe that explains why with so many young receivers already on the roster, we are loading up again in this class.
Otherwise, it seems a bit odd to add a two-year player, no matter how good, when we already have so many receiver commitments in hand.

I see your point but the other side of that coin is with all the key players we lose after this season, albeit none are WR's except McCoy(there may be more I can't remember, Colin Peek is gone too), if he is a game changer with the ball in his hands Saban might think him worth it. You can see on my newest thread down there he is one of the only speed guys that his 40 time seems pretty solid being that it is the same on both scouts and rivals.(Unless they are both using the same clocked time which is possible)
Harris and Thompkins may not be a package deal, it is my personal feeling that they are or are the very least want to be. I felt the same way about Kendall Kelly and Jerrell Harris and they are both in T-town now. I also feel while they may have been a package deal, I think Harris wants to be at BAMA and will come if we want him regardless. Either way I think if Saban wants one or both of them then we should want them as well. So I say good luck to Harris and Thompkins......not everyone gets looked at by schools like BAMA and they should be proud of their achievements thus far in their young careers.

There sure seems to be mutual interest with Thompkins. I still wonder what all the receiver commitments -- and the ones we're still after -- say about the coaches' opinions of the players already on the roster.

Well when you break it down, the only ones you ever see making catches are McCoy(rarely) he is gone after this yr. Alexander(rarely) and Hanks(shown flashes and dropsies) both gone after nxt yr. Julio and Maze both gone after 2011, Julio maybe nxt yr. There are the main guys playing now. The only 2 guys I have heard about doing well as far as the freshman go are Norwood and Bowman(who is recovering from surgery I believe), Bell is supposed to doing OK as well. So you have 5 guys actually contributing in games and 3 more with obvious potential at this point and 18 WR's on the roster, that isn't very impressive and leaves a lot to be desired for the coaches and us fans as well. I wonder how Kelly is coming along as I have not heard much about his play in practice. He has the physical size but he had a terrible senior season in HS and there were rumors we would retract our offer towards the end there. We also lose 9 WR's from the roster the after this yr(3) and next(6) due to graduation. I think we all, as fans, feel a need for better WR's and I hope with more of Saban and CJM recruits coming we will see a rise in the production soon. If Thompkins can help do that I think having him would be great while the other guys in this class develop.
Re: What's the story with JUCO WR Kenbrell Thompkins?
We need more WRs that can create space between themselves and the defender. We have two that do it consistently, and one of those is nearly always doubled.

Bingo. RTO, I still believe at least half of Greg's so-called passing slump during the Ole Miss, S.C. and UT games stems from the fact that he was forced to make far more difficult throws. The reason: No one downfield could consistently get open.
We face the best defensive backfield of the bunch next week. I hope we learn something over the next 10 days.
In the meantime, let's sign Blake Sims and every other receiver we can get.

I keep hearing rumors that Blake is going to decommit. Are any of you hearing this??

The rumors around B. Sims have been swirling for a while. First, it was UT, now it's a legitimate concern towards UGA. Look down the board for a thread on the call he got from Richt.
