So here is some information about the New Orleans area from someone who lives here for those that are looking to make the game. (And can possibly help with me landing tickets, gotta try all avenues right?)

For those flying into MSY... (which is West of New Orleans)
Staying in Kenner, Metairie, Saint Rose will have you closer to the airport when flying in/out. For most, they don't require the 3 night minimum and I have seen them range from $90-$140/night as of this afternoon.

For those driving in from the Alabama area... (which is East of New Orleans)

Staying in Slidell as mentioned is not too far (approx. 30 miles) from New Orleans as well as Bay St. Louis, Gulfport/Biloxi (approx 60-75 miles). Most of them are not requiring the 3 night minimum and are less expensive than staying in the city of New Orleans.

Places/areas I particularly would not stay...
Eastern New Orleans, Westbank of New Orleans.

Again, these are just my opinions and from someone who lives here.

If I can assist with other questions, feel free to reach out!

Ride Amtrak down from Jackson, Hammond, etc. Party all night into the morning, then ride back up the next day.

Thanks for heads up on Hilton opening up some rooms. Being a Hilton Honors Diamond member I just booked a free room at the Roosevelt Waldorf on edge of French Quarter and 8-10 blocks from the dome! I was one of the silly ones who bought a "reservation" to buy 2 BCS tickets back in February, so I'm set and pumped already!

Thought it would be nice to help new folks out traveling to NOLA for the game and bring this back up.

Feel free to ask questions about the area and I will help answer what I can!

Last year my son and I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Metairie. Room was less than $100 for the night. Right off I-10 and only took 10 minutes to get to hotel after the game.

Most hotel chains will guarantee lowest cost if you book through their website. They will usually match and discount even more if you find a cheaper fare on expedia, travelocity, hotwire, etc. There is still pretty good room availability in and around New Orleans.

Not hotel, but travel related: I noticed Delta has put on at least one direct flight to New Orleans from Birmingham on December 31 and a direct return on January 2. It showed up on Delta.com yesterday morning. If you are so inclined, it will cost about $550 round trip (can't remember exactly). There will likely be some one day charters as well, I saw one with "Traveling with the Tide" for $700+, includes bus ride from airport and back. And a box lunch.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn - Downtown/Superdome a few weeks ago. It was Halloween as well as Voodoo Music Festival weekend. Their price was reasonable and the location was great. You can walk to the Superdome and the French Quarter during the day. It's easy to catch a cab in front of the hotel as well. I paid around $200 per night. It also has onsite parking for a fee, which is worth it.

I would imagine that (if they haven't already) they would start implementing "minimum night stays" at hotels in/near the French Quarter for the game, especially with it being New Year's.

www.cheaphotels.com I got in last night, Gretna, for $120 a night + $20 in taxes (only had to stay one night, elected for two nights), less than four miles to stadium. Wanted Slidell but the taxi will be pretty pricey, make sure you figure that in. Now to find tickets at the 500 level or below (500 level seats weren't bad for last Sugar Bowl although the outcome sucked!) for a price that won't make me have to sell an organ. Roll Tide Roll!!!

Good luck finding a hotel in New Orleans with less than a 3 night minimum. I tried on Saturday to no avail. But, I am pretty picky about where I will stay, LOL. Got 3 nights at the Sheraton Canal Street on Amex points. Pretty excited!!

Gretna is on what we call the "Westbank", which is right on the other side of the Mississippi River. The tolls that used to be on the Gretna side coming to the New Orleans side have since gone away, so there is no longer a charge to cross over the bridge.

When we say "Westbank" or "Eastbank", the river actually zig zags through this area to be North and South, so looking at it on a map can be misleading because of how it looks...thought I'd throw in the fun fact of the river in NOLA!

We actually had plans to spend New Year's in NOLA anyways. We are going down on the 29th, and are booked until at least the 2nd. So it was just a HUGE bonus that things worked out the way they did. Now if I can find 4 tickets for a reasonable price...

bamafan76, I've got hotel in Slidell. Any suggestions about parking in NO? For example: If we come into town around noonish are there any good places to park say in between the French Quarter and the Superdome?

Let me first ask some questions for you to answer:

Are you looking for free parking or paid parking?
How much walking are you willing to do?

This will help out.

Paid is fine. Planning on getting into town early to eat, sight-see, and probably eat more before the game.

So if you want to try and park somewhere close to in between, you may try around Harrah's casino. This will put you closer to the Quarter than the Dome, but somewhere in between. They have parking garages there (not sure of prices during this time) and parking lots up and around there. The walk from there to the Dome is about 3/4 of a mile.

You could also park at the Dome, but the walk from there is further to walk to the Quarter. I'm sure they will have live music at Champion's Square day of the game with plenty food/drink vendors.
