In the midst of a lawsuit by the University of Alabama over the proper use of Crimson Tide colors and logos, the University has officially trademarked “Roll Tide” as its own property. The move comes as artist Daniel Moore continues his legal battle over his right to depict classic moments in Crimson Tide football history in his paintings. “With regard to trademark infringement, UA argued that the First Amendment does not give anyone the right to infringe on others’ trademarks,” a UA spokeswoman said. “Of course we believe freedom of expression is a key component of the University of Alabama experience. But don’t get it twisted: freedom ain’t free.”
The trademark, approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, will allow the University to collect royalty fees any time someone writes or utters the phrase “Roll Tide.” Students will be charged $1 to their student account each time they utter the iconic cheer.

Are they for real? What about RTR? I checked the calender, it's not April Fool's day. Roll Tide Roll! (bill me at TideFans.com.

Am I understanding this correctly? Just saying the phrase "Roll Tide" now will cost money? I'm a bit confused. :conf3:

Operatives trained by the Internal Revenue Service will rove the Quad on gameday to collect money from fans. Those that refuse to pay will be escorted off the campus and may have future tickets revoked.

That statement above in the article should tell you all you need to know about the validity of it... :cool2:

so is the whole thing a joke or just the "pay $1 everytime you say it.?" Obviously, as a former student of the School of Communications at Alabama, I would be super surprised if ALL of the words and phrases associated with Alabama Sports aren't already trademarked. Marketing 101 says you always trademark your "stuff."

CW isn't printed on the weekends (only Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). Had to get it out before Sunday.

The article is a joke. And I'm not sure "Roll Tide" is trademarked. Does anyone see the trademark logo on anything that says "Roll Tide?"

If it is an April Fools Joke (which I pray it is) then it is a bad one because it might generate thousands on top of thousands of phone calls to the University at one time and people who have no clue what is going on are having to fumble over the phone with an angry Bama fan.

The writer of that story is the Editor of the CW. Most likely, that article was approved by the head of the Student Media department for those exact reasons. I'm sure the AD knows about it.

It should be from a printed/resale standpoint. I don't think a trademark should or can go as far as if someone says the phrase they are fined. But it definitely makes sense to keep people from making shirts and other things with "Roll Tide" on it and selling for a profit.
