Per Chris Walsh, Fort Mill (S.C.) punter Worth Gregory had planned to attend South Carolina as a preferred walk-on and had "committed" to the South Carolina coaches. However, he was recently contacted by Alabama assistant Bobby Williams and has decided to head to Tuscaloosa instead. He will be a preferred walk-on and plans to enroll this summer. He's a 6-foot-4, 200-pound kid with a nice leg. Worth Gregory (Fort Mill HS, SC) 6-4, 185, Class of 2012
Also, per Chris Sailer's kicking website," Worth was by far the best punter at the camp. Won every punting competition hands down. He has the perfect frame to be a great D1 punter. Worth has showed tremendous improvement. He is a nice D1 prospect that should play at the D1 level."

Re: New punter to walk on.

It will be great, if he comes in and wins the starting job! Love it.
If he does, that means he's on scholarship, right? He'll have to wait a season or two since he's a preferred walk-on. Or am I getting the types of walk-on's confused?

Re: New punter to walk on.

Is there ever a try out for a player that is not a preferred or invited walk on?

Nothing scholarship related . Preferred walk-on players are the guys college coaches pursue and feel could become legitimate players at some point . These types are also usually included on initial rosters prior to their expansion once classes start .

He has the length to get good leverage on his kicks. Coach Williams may be tired of having the special teams considered a weakness.

Mandell has had a very, very good offseason. I'll be surprised if he loses his job.

Re: New punter to walk on.

Positives - preferred walk ons are part of the 105 early practice players unlike many other walk ons, so you have every advantage the 85 have (locker, time with coaches, training staff, favorable class schedules, academic support staff) without the free tuition and books. With little exception (think, former minor league baseball player wants to join the team) most true walk ons are little more than students who want to live out a dream (Rudy) and few ever make the 105 group.

Negatives - As a preferred walk on, if you play in year 1 or 2 you count against the 85, scholarship or not. So you can bet the farm that these players will be redshirted year 1 and then either be a starter in year 2 or (more likely) be a scout team player in year 2. If this guy was the #2 punter, Mandel is hurt and we run him on the field we might go to 86 scholarship players. So the attention in year 1 and 2 will go to guys who can see the field. He could be our second best punter but will be a ghost until 2014 as a RS Soph unless he is our best punter in year 2.

I am sure he is looking at the possibility of being our punter in 2014-2016.

Re: New punter to walk on.

Mandell will be our punter for the next two seasons, but he's on the downhill now.

We'll see what happens with this kid, but walk-ons are the lifeblood of the kicking game. This kid could redshirt this season and compete for the starting job at punter as a redshirt sophomore in 2014.

Either way, what we definitely don't want is to be approaching February of 2014 with no punter on hand and then having to give out a scholarship and hand over the reigns to a true freshman (as we did in 2010). Let's hope someone like Gregory can make all of that a non-issue.

If the way Mandell punted in the A-Day game is any indication, he will keep the job. However, it is comforting to have a quality backup in the wings. Having two vying for the job can only help them both improve!
