Newbies, see if you know without the aid of google. I'm sure a few old timers will get it right.

Hint- Both games occurred in the same season and the Quarterbacks of both opponents had long and successful NFL careers.

Without looking it up, I'd guess that one of them was Clemson from mid-70s when Bama beat them 60-something to zip. I remember listening to that game on the radio but can't recall the year or the exact score.

UA. 66. California. 0.

UA. 77. VPI 6

I attended both games. The California game was at Legion Field and I think was the second game of the day following an Auburn game earlier. Against VMI we had 5 back rush for over 100 yards. On one series we had a back run 80 yards but the play was called back for UA being offsides. The next play was a run play covering 85 yards.

I was also at both of those games in '73.
Bama 66--Cal-0
Steve Bartowski quarterback (Atlanta Falcons)

Bama 77--Virginia Tech 6
Quarterback--??

Bama set NCAA records for total offense and rushing offense in that game against VA Tech. I remember it being 42-0 at the half.

In all fairness to Don Strock..the weather conditions were ridiculously horrible that day. Our wishbone was much better suited for a small hurricane than his pro style passing offense.

While we're on the subject of large margin of victory:
1951 89-0 over Delta St.
1921 95-0 over Bryson(?)
1922 110-0 Marion Inst. (should have DVD'ed that one;) )

OTOH, the largest margin of defeat went all the way back to a 0-78 game against Vandy in 1906.

That was Calvin Culliver's run was for 87 yds, followed by his 80 yd run against Vandy the next year. A "fur piece" either way....

I believe you are thinking of a later game which was played in a driving rain. The 1973 77-6 game was played at night in Tuscaloosa in great weather.

The game which was played in the rain was actually in 1972 and I believe Don Strock suffered a broken leg after having a punt blocked.
