Big A Latest Bama News 12/6/12

This is Where the football season never ends! Bama News first, and foremost,
interesting SEC news, and salient football news:

Asked about Tomlinson's progress before Alabama's game against Western Carolina three weeks ago, UA coach Nick Saban indicated that Tomlinson's skill set would have been a strong fit for Alabama's needs on the defensive line this season. "Just watching him day to day, he has really good quickness. If he wasn't hurt he's probably a guy who can help us because he's one of those quick-twitch guys," Saban said. "Especially when you play a game like (Texas A&M), when you're playing against the spread and you need guys who can run and chase the quarterback, I think he would do a good job in a role like that."

Speaking today at the Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York, Emmert said of conference realignment: "When people say it's all about the money, that's not inaccurate." Later, Emmert added: "When the world believes it's all a money grab, how can you say we can stick with the same scholarship model as 40 years ago?" Schools defeated the stipend measure last year, expressing concern about how they could afford them and the impact on Title IX compliance. Arriving soon is new money from the college football playoff that will be worth about $470 million a year. Back in 2007-08, Texas, Ohio State and Florida were the only athletics departments that exceeded $100 million in revenue. Five years later, there were 11 schools once Alabama, Michigan, LSU, Penn State, Oklahoma, Auburn, Tennessee and Wisconsin joined the $100 million club. Auburn had more revenue than Alabama in 2007-08, which marked Nick Saban's first season as the Crimson Tide's football coach. Alabama's revenue increased by 40 percent over the next five years compared to a 19-percent increase for Auburn.

Massington is recovering from an ACL injury he suffered over the summer and decided to end his commitment to the Trojans after they denied his request to enroll in school in January. Massington said he wants to enroll early so he can work with a professional training staff during the remainder of his recovery. "It has to be midyear, because I want to go somewhere to finish taking care of my knee," Massington said. "I’m running and cutting and stuff, but I’m taking it slow until I get to a school with professional doctors and trainers."

From a potentially-deadly disease he can’t remember, to an experience he’ll never forget, Miles Benton’s been through a lot in his first decade of life. Year ten is going better than year two, when doctors diagnosed him with cancer in his leg. Last month Miles went to a college football stadium for the first time and saw his favorite team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, defeat their bitter rivals Auburn, and got to go in the locker room and spend time with the players after the game. "It was pretty awesome, first Iron Bowl, so yeah, it was cool," the 10-year-old said. He was the guest of Austin Shepherd, whom he met for the first time after the game.

There have been more than a few forgettable days on the football field for Tennessee over the past few years.

Wednesday was a day the Vols would like to forget on the coach search trail.
Louisville's Charlie Strong and Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy both said thanks, but no thanks, after receiving contract offers from Tennessee. The rejection by Strong was especially tough to swallow for Tennessee after athletic director Dave Hart flew up to Louisville to meet with Strong on Wednesday and felt confident he had his man. But later Wednesday night, Strong informed Tennessee that he was
    staying put at Louisville.
    Sure hate to That..NOT!

Bret Bielema is a “name” coach. Usually, “name” coaches from successful Top 15 programs don’t leave for other programs unless that new program is the coach’s good old alma mater. But Arkansas AD Jeff Long snagged Wisconsin’s coach just days after he’d wrapped up his third Rose Bowl invite in a row. That in itself is a coup.
